By Larry Sullivan

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Southeast Division, Prelude to the Gators at Auto Plus Raceway at Gainesville:

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
11 Todd Veney 19 John Headley
E1 ****WINNER**** 0.105 6.327 217.32 0.196 6.309 181.01
 Qualified: #2 5.598 259.31 #5 8.525 91.63
Weather conditions: air temperature 59 degrees, relative humidity 53 percent, barometer 29.76 inches, adjusted altitude 650 feet, track temperature 65 degrees.

Veney had a good run in the first qualifying session, then struggled with tire shake. Headley shook on his only qualifying attempt, then skipped the last two sessions.

Veney had the better of two unimpressive lights, but he backpedaled about 100 feet out to get through shake and Headley took the lead. Veney got the car hooked back up and chased Headley in what looked like a lost cause until there was a loud BANG from Headley's car as the supercharger let go. That let Veney go by for the win, his holeshot making the difference in a tight finish.

Todd Veney's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(0.112), 330 ft(-0.107), 660ft(-0.163), 1,000ft(-0.111). MOV: 0.0734 seconds (approximately 19 feet).

2063 Mark Rogers 7 Kris Hool
E1 0.061 No Time ****WINNER**** 0.151 5.691 259.36
 Qualified: #6 9.649 55.77 #1 5.598 261.62
Hool made good runs on his two qualifying runs, while Rogers popped a burst panel on one and had problems on his second try.

Rogers spun the tires, then lost the blower belt and coasted slowly through. Meanwhile, Hool made a great run for the conditions (lots of power, marginal traction), his car initially making left and right moves before settling down.

Kris Hool's incremental times: 60ft-0.951 sec., 330ft-2.543, 660ft-3.781/201.04 mph, 1,000ft-4.823. He gets a bye to the finals.

Last pair, very closely matched during qualifying.

This wasn't close, Ferro up in smoke immediately. Meanwhile, Pomponio looked like a bracket racer, running 5.71 on all three of his runs at this event. He will have lane choice against Veney in the semifinals.

Dan Pomponio's incremental times: 60ft-0.977 sec., 330ft-2.563, 660ft-3.793/201.70 mph, 1,000ft-4.833.
