Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 53rd annual O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jeff Arend No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.107/95.17, Was #15
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 7.901/73.67, Now #16; No Prior Run

3:37 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 22 percent, barometer 29.01 inches, adjusted altitude 2,480 feet, track temperature 103 degrees.

Ron Capps is on the bump spot at 5.115.

This will be Haddock's first attempt for the weekend and he is off the throttle after shaking the times about 100 feet out. The car can't make the turnout and stops on the track.

Arend's car shakes the tires hard and then bangs right off the line. The chutes come out and the car stops on the track near the 660' lights.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.225/248.89, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.225/248.89, Was #10
Right Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 10.190/58.17, Now #18; Best prior run: 10.190/58.17, Was #18

3:43 p.m. Back to racing...

Lesenko's Family Worsham Charger gets the tires way loose at the green and he has to lift.

Pedregon's beautiful new American Racing Wheels Camry body is no more. The car leaves with a strong 0.891 sixty foot time and runs well until near the 660 lights. The engine starts to get unhappy at that point and finally fails big time right before the 1000' lights and blows the body way into the air. The body drifts down and hits just outside of the right lane guard rail in a heap. Pedregon fights the bodyless funny car to a stop with flames still visible from the engine and is quickly out of the car. Major carnage!

Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.315, 660ft-3.318/252.99 mph.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.239/287.96, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.280/286.50, Was #12
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 6.658/103.52, Now #15; Best prior run: 8.083/86.25, Was #17

4:06 p.m. That took a while!

Hight's Mustang strikes the tires again right off the line and he slows.

Burkhart goes right on down the track on a clean and straight pass. He picks up a little, but will stay on the bump for now.

Phil Burkart's incremental times: 60ft-0.927 sec., 330ft-2.388, 660ft-3.405/253.04 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 9.744/87.85, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.221/283.25, Was #9
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.300/251.20, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.626/98.58, Was #14

Wilkerson's Mustang smokes the tires early and coasts on down.

Force's Horse is a little lazy off the line and then has the engine get unhappy near the 660' lights. He has to lift and won't make the show today.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 8.041/78.97, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.190/305.08, Was #8
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.102/314.53, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.115/146.91, Was #14

Capps is the last car to try to bump into the show for this session and makes a strong pass right on down Broadway and into the new number six position for now. Nice pass!

Tasca has the tires starting to spin and smoke right off the line.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.338, 660ft-3.322/265.59 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.045/316.67, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.148/309.13, Was #8
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.107/302.69, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.232/244.83, Was #12

Alexis DeJoria is on the bump spot at 4.232 and looking to improve. She does so with ease on a clean pass into the new number nine spot.

2012 World Champion, Beckman, powers on down the track to the new top spot. That both the quickest ET and the fastest MPH, so far. Nice.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.906 sec., 330ft-2.315, 660ft-3.272/269.73 mph.
Alexis DeJoria's incremental times: 60ft-0.915 sec., 330ft-2.340, 660ft-3.309/264.13 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 6.082/111.81, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.093/296.44, Was #5
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.101/306.26, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.104/306.26, Was #8

Tony Pedregon is on the bump spot at 4.225.

Cruz Pedregon has a strong leave, but the tires are up in smoke before the 330' lights.

Worsham plays bracket racer, running just 0.003 quicker with the exact same MPH. That little difference moves the DHL Camry up a spot into the new number seven spot.

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.324, 660ft-3.304/262.18 mph.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.085/308.28, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.087/308.78, Was #4
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 8.309/78.22, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.097/304.46, Was #6

Hagan was away first and had better numbers down low, but the tires were up in smoke before the 330' lights.

Gray makes a picture perfect pass and picks up just 0.002 in ET and loses 0.5 MPH to stay number four.

Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.325, 660ft-3.295/264.49 mph.

Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.343/208.68, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.071/311.49, Was #3

Densham won't make a pass this session.

Force has a strong leave with the best times through the 330' lights, but the Mustang kicks the tires right after that.

Courtney Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.886 sec., 330ft-2.292, 660ft-3.291/238.85 mph.

4:30 p.m. Fast Jack beckman is number one at 4.045 and Tony Pedregon is on the bump spot at 4.225.
