Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 53rd annual O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Leif Andreasson Runs 7.920/98.40, Now #1

Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 31 percent, barometer 28.99 inches, adjusted altitude 2,126 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

Andreasson with a big pop right before half track and the car went silent as he coasted on through the 1320.


Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.836/246.26, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Drake No Time, Now #3

It appeared Drake rolled the beams when he start to bring the rpms up before the tree was activated and he will not get a time. Williamson with a good clean pass to start the season.

Left Lane: Hannes Wernhart Runs 6.899/196.73, Now #3
Right Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 6.387/162.04, Now #2

Wernhart start to lose traction right at the hit and pedaled it and apparently he used up an engine as the Safety Safari is rolling. Harrington clicked it off early...

Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 10.035/93.88, Now #6
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.625/258.96, Now #1

Woznichak started to haze the tires right at the hit, drove through it and then clicked it off. Hough with a clean pass to go to the top of the list. Brian Hough's incremental times: 60ft-0.964 sec., 330ft-2.520, 660ft-3.729/205.76 mph, 1,000ft-4.756.

Left Lane: Jason Rupert No Time, Now #9
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.637/253.42, Now #2

Rupert with problems on the burnout and drives it off the top end. Bellemeur is straight down the groove to go to the number two spot. Sean Bellemeur's incremental times: 60ft-0.963 sec., 330ft-2.513, 660ft-3.727/204.63 mph, 1,000ft-4.759.

Left Lane: Keeter Ray No Time, Now #11
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 11.610/74.10, Now #8

When Ray brought the rpms up the car rolled the beams and he will not get a time. Gordon started to lose traction right at the hit and pedaled it, but the car didn't hook up so he clicked it off.

Left Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 6.205/251.44, Now #5
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.788/252.57, Now #3

Westerfield started to lose traction right at the hit and pedaled it, still gets in the top half of the show. Gasparrelli with a clean pass to go to the number three spot. Steve Gasparrelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.954 sec., 330ft-2.578, 660ft-3.836/197.80 mph, 1,000ft-4.896.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 10.826/108.40, Now #10
Right Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 13.735/64.87, Now #12

Payne lost traction right at the hit and the car made a quick move to the centerline and clicked it off. Lombardo Jr. was up in smoke right at the hit.

Left Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.804/249.90, Now #5
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.638/259.46, Now #3

Bartone was straight down the groove to go to the number three spot. Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.976 sec., 330ft-2.543, 660ft-3.750/206.39 mph, 1,000ft-4.774. Whiteley with a nice pass to get into the top half of the show. Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.969 sec., 330ft-2.565, 660ft-3.827/196.93 mph, 1,000ft-4.902.
