Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, Short Line Express Gambler Shootout at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: John Finke Runs 7.916/235.76, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.653/251.25, Was #13
Right Lane: Cody Perkins Runs 6.057/163.93, Now #15; No Prior Run

12:38 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 22 percent, barometer 27.99 inches, adjusted altitude 3,590 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

Chase Copeland is on the bump spot at 5.511.

Perkins is here today and will now make his first attempt. He makes a strong leave with a 0.927 sixty foot time and runs well until right after half track. The engine goes BOOM, big time, and slows.

Finke misses the tune up completely, as the tires are up in smoke hard at the green. He tries to pump the pedal a couple of times with even more smoke before giving it up.

Lots of little aluminum pieces on the track, but no oil.

Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.525/250.97, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.596/252.33, Was #12
Right Lane: William Litton Runs 5.465/251.53, Now #6; No Prior Run

12:48 p.m. Back to qualifying.

Yesterday, Litton left before the tree was activated and did not get a time. Great straight and clean pass to move into the field in the current number six spot.

Our 2011 TAD Champion will give up his #1 position at the end of next week. Shields continues to struggle and doesn't pick up enough to qualify on a clean pass.

Duane Shields' incremental times: 60ft-0.974 sec., 330ft-2.513, 660ft-3.666/217.28 mph, 1,000ft-4.650.
William Litton's incremental times: 60ft-0.939 sec., 330ft-2.448, 660ft-3.598/216.58 mph, 1,000ft-4.588.

Left Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.402/252.24, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.536/248.43, Was #12
Right Lane: Jackie Fricke Runs 5.591/242.15, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.688/234.41, Was #15

Joey Severance is on the bump spot at 5.506.

Ahten uses his new tune up to thunder on down the track into the current number two position. Looks like there is more there, as he only runs 252.240 MPH.

Fricke sneaks up on it and picks up a little ET and MPH to move into the current #14 spot.

Johnny Ahten's incremental times: 60ft-0.926 sec., 330ft-2.404, 660ft-3.544/217.53 mph, 1,000ft-4.532.
Jackie Fricke's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.517, 660ft-3.675/215.89 mph, 1,000ft-4.685.

Left Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 6.277/166.13, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.519/258.52, Was #11
Right Lane: Sidnei Frigo Runs 5.429/263.98, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.557/253.80, Was #13

Jim Whiteley is on the bump spot at 5.471.

Both cars are very capable of bumping into the field.

Olivarez has some holes out at the hit and clicks it early.

Frigo makes a strong leave and uses the power to move up six spots into the tough field.

Aaron Olivarez's incremental times: 60ft-0.987 sec., 330ft-2.551, 660ft-3.758/197.86 mph, 1,000ft-5.003.
Sidnei Frigo's incremental times: 60ft-0.973 sec., 330ft-2.494, 660ft-3.628/220.84 mph, 1,000ft-4.591.

Left Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.483/262.23, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.506/261.02, Was #10
Right Lane: Chase Copeland Runs 5.448/266.74, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.511/264.23, Was #11

William Litton is on the bump spot at 5.465.

These two ran together yesterday. They ran close together then and do so again, but Copeland picks up enough to just bump into the field for now.

Joey Severance's incremental times: 60ft-0.914 sec., 330ft-2.415, 660ft-3.609/208.23 mph, 1,000ft-4.625.
Chase Copeland's incremental times: 60ft-0.952 sec., 330ft-2.479, 660ft-3.642/216.27 mph, 1,000ft-4.614.

Left Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.287/270.86, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.471/222.51, Was #10
Right Lane: Megan McKernan Runs 5.380/266.85, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.407/266.64, Was #4

Chase Copeland is on the bump spot at 5.448.

Whiteley is the new 2012 Champion and didn't find the sweet spot yesterday and isn't in the field yet. He does so today and shows the rest of the field how to do it with a stellar pass into the new top spot with a great ET and MPH. Sweet!

McKernan's fuel is right behind him going down the track and slides into the number two spot with another grat pass.

Jim Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.922 sec., 330ft-2.353, 660ft-3.486/218.16 mph, 1,000ft-4.459.
Megan McKernan's incremental times: 60ft-0.942 sec., 330ft-2.445, 660ft-3.582/220.04 mph, 1,000ft-4.546.

Left Lane: Don St. Arnaud Runs 5.439/262.54, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.421/265.80, Was #7
Right Lane: Greg Hunter Runs 7.103/128.79, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.407/266.74, Was #5

Sidnei Frigo is on the bump spot at 5.429.

St. Arnaud makes another clean and straight pass, but doesn't improve.

Hunter had a great leave with better numbers than St. Arnaud until after the 330 lights, but slowed right after that.

Don St. Arnaud's incremental times: 60ft-0.953 sec., 330ft-2.449, 660ft-3.599/215.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.588.
Greg Hunter's incremental times: 60ft-0.960 sec., 330ft-2.425, 660ft-3.861/151.63 mph, 1,000ft-5.467.

Left Lane: Ray Martin Runs 10.062/79.25, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.410/263.26, Was #6
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.331/268.28, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.397/266.16, Was #3

Both guys are already in the field and looking to improve.

Demke has a great 0.927 sixty foot time and parlays that into another almost perfect pass to recapture the number two spot on the ladder.

Martin had a strong leave and then may have had a small boomer around the 330 lights.

Ray Martin's incremental times: 60ft-0.942 sec., 330ft-2.678, 660ft-4.892/097.61 mph, 1,000ft-7.421.
Chris Demke's incremental times: 60ft-0.927 sec., 330ft-2.370, 660ft-3.515/216.03 mph, 1,000ft-4.496.

1:13 p.m. Jim Whiteley is number one at 5.287 and Sidnei Frigo is on the bump spot at 5.429.
