Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 12th annual Big O Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jon Capps Runs 4.114/290.51, Now #7; No Prior Run

5:35 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 16 percent, barometer 27.98 inches, adjusted altitude 3,441 feet, track temperature 80 degrees.

Capps makes an impressive run, a career best, and he gets in the seventh spot for now.

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 9.101/48.59, Now #20; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 7.658/75.92, Now #19; No Prior Run

Diehl gets about 200 feet out and goes up in smoke. Lesenko gets a little further and suffers the same fate.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 8.890/78.30, Now #20; Best prior run: 9.164/75.16, Was #21

Johnson hits the throttle, the engine starts to lose power quickly and goes silent about 400 feet out.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.191/295.59, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.466/200.44, Was #17
Right Lane: Paul Lee No Time, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.282/284.81, Was #16

Lee does his burnout, has problems getting it in reverse and has to drive off the end of the track. DeJoria was waiting for the car to clear the track and was told to shut down. DeJoria fires back up after they clear the track. She hits the throttle, goes right down the groove and improves to the 15th spot.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.108/299.20, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.191/285.77, Was #16
Right Lane: John Force Runs 6.388/105.28, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.154/296.37, Was #13

Force gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Wilkerson starts drifting to the right near the end of the run but hangs on and moves up to the seventh spot.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 7.228/93.10, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.168/300.66, Was #15
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.099/305.70, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.151/301.33, Was #13

Hagan gets about 300 feet out and is out of power. Pedregon leaves the line, drifts to the left near the end of the run, then the header flames on the left side turn a little green as he goes through the lights. He improves and moves into the field in the sixth spot.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 9.914/66.63, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.108/308.28, Was #7
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.123/302.41, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.143/291.95, Was #13

Head hits the throttle, gets about 100 feet out and the car noses over, not sure why. Gray goes right down the groove and improves to the tenth spot, for now.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 6.844/99.26, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.093/306.88, Was #4
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.902/159.61, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.139/298.40, Was #13

Beckman gets about 200 feet out, has problems and backs off the throttle. Hight gets about 300 feet out and the car noses over.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.123/312.64, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.093/312.71, Was #3
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.634/124.50, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.136/305.15, Was #12

Force goes right down the groove with a good run but doesn't improve. Tasca strikes the tires early and finally gives up on the run.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.490/192.49, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.084/308.21, Was #2
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.796/166.17, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.136/308.99, Was #11

Arend and Pedregon get about 500 feet out and go up in smoke at almost the same time.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 5.658/122.02, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.070/313.73, Was #1
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 8.023/82.90, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.098/308.78, Was #5

Capps has traction problems early and backs off the throttle. Neff gets a little further and strikes the tires.
