BRISTOL, Tenn. - Joe Santangelo and Brad Plourd lead the short list of winners today at Bristol Dragway for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event.

Defending Stock National Champion, Santangelo, from Marlborough, Conn., took his '94 Achieva through eliminations and into the winner's circle defeating Craig Marshall in today's Super Stock final round. Santangelo went 10.649 seconds at 117.22 mph to Marshall's quicker 9.050, 151.31 using a starting line advantage and running closer to his index than Marshall out of Winchester, Ohio.

Plourd, Avon, Ind., added to his collection of the coveted NHRA Wally trophy by beating Michael Shelton, Independence, Ky., in Super Comp. Plourd went 9.192 seconds at 137.27 mph to Shelton's slowing 11.640 run.

The Stock title went to Donnie Carroll, New Milford, Conn., and his '97 Formula who knocked out Robbie Shaw and Leland Poppell won Super Street on a double breakout with Ed Pauley, Shelby, N.C. Carroll went 10.612 at 121.90 to Shaw's 10.337, 118.65 and Poppell was 10.896 on his winning run.

Cooling weather and declining track temperatures forced officials to postpone final eliminations for Comp Eliminator, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Super Gas. These classes will complete their elimination rounds at the next NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil event at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, Ga.

Running in conjunction with the event were the three Southeast Division index classes with John Rollins, Brendan George, and Larry Ericksmoen taking the wins. Rollins, High Springs, Fla., beat Jacob Rutledge in 10.00; Chris Justus fouled, giving the win to George in 11.00; and Ericksmoen won in 12.00 when Shane Williams fouled as well.
