MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Northeast Division, event at Maple Grove Raceway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Dan Dietrich Runs 9.246/68.17, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Richard St. Pierre Runs 6.497/138.46, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.997/195.70, Was #12
7:02 p.m. - Dietrich left before the tree in the first session and did not get an ET. Dietrich got to midtrack when something went wrong with his car and the chutes came out. St. Pierre started trailing smoke and popped the blower as he crossed the finish line. Neither driver made it into the top eight.
Left Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 5.382/263.36, Now #2; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Frank Schuster Runs 8.881/88.55, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.788/246.48, Was #9
Schuster was quick for the first 60 feet, then the car slowed considerably and he will not make the show. McPhillips had a good run down the groove and moved from out of the field to the number two spot in the order.
Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.410/270.43, Now #5; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bruce Horner Runs 5.757/242.71, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.714/243.46, Was #9
Horner was just bumped out of the field by McPhillips and Shields was not in the field when this session started, so it came down to thir run for both of them. Shields got the run he needed, Horner did not. Dan Mercier just got bumped from the field and Jackie Fricke is on the bump spot now at 5.550 seconds.
Left Lane: Mike Burns Runs 5.631/255.43, Now #10; Best prior run: 11.117/69.94, Was #16
Right Lane: Dan Mercier Runs 5.500/255.05, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.600/250.92, Was #9
Mercier was just bumped from the field, Burns was way down in the number 16 spot for the eight-car field. Mercier was quick enough to bump Fricke from the field, but Fricke and a couple of others are still waiting to make their second qualifying attempts. Burns' run looked okay but did not make the field.
Left Lane: Karen Stalba Runs 5.752/242.19, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.898/227.15, Was #14
Right Lane: Jackie Fricke Runs 5.735/253.42, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.550/258.42, Was #9
Both Stalba and Fricke needed to be quicker than 5.500 seconds to make the field. Fricke drove through a little tire shake and Stalba was just not quick enough so neither will return tomorrow for eliminations. Fricke's car left some oil on the track in the shutdown area, so we'll be down for a little cleanup.
Left Lane: Tom Fox Jr. Runs 6.052/196.50, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.844/236.01, Was #14
Right Lane: Mike Kosky Runs 5.428/259.81, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.420/262.08, Was #7
Fox had a strong launch and was at about 1,000 feet when the engine in his car started trailing smoke and there was a flash flame from under the rear of the car. Kosky was not as quick as this afternoon, and will stay where he was in the order. There's oil on the track so we'll be down again for a bit.
Left Lane: Dan Page Runs 5.399/268.49, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.388/267.43, Was #4
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.440/260.61, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.419/262.49, Was #6
Both runs looked good but neither was quicker than this afternoon.
Left Lane: John Finke Runs 5.369/257.78, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.387/259.36, Was #3
Right Lane: Richard Bourke Runs 5.397/264.44, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.311/269.40, Was #1
Finke moved into the number two spot with a good run down the quarter mile. Bourke had a good run too but was not as quick as the first session. He'll stay in the number one spot in the qualifying order.
