Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Jim Samuel

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Northeast Division, event at Maple Grove Raceway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Marie Ferriolo Runs 5.858/244.38, Now #8; No Prior Run

6:45 p.m. - Ferriolo did not make a pass in the first qualifying session. The good news is that she took her car down the groove to make the field. The bad news is that she's on the bump spot.

Left Lane: John Headley Runs 7.753/117.65, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Wayne Morris Runs 6.234/244.16, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.936/244.16, Was #9

This was Headley's only qualifying attempt this weekend. Morris ust got bumped out of the top eight by Ferriolo and needed to go quicker than 5.858 seconds to get back in. He spun the tires out of the gate and pedaled the throttle, but was not quick enough to get back in the field. Headley's car stumbled out of the gate and was not quick enough to qualify for eliminations. Marie Ferriolo is on the bump spot at 5.858, with Dan Pomponio the driver left who can push her out.

Left Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 5.768/252.24, Now #6; Best prior run: 23.192/28.63, Was #11
Right Lane: Eric Lourie Runs 13.419/101.94, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.776/248.84, Was #6

Lourie spun the tires off the starting line and backed off the throttle. Pomponio had a clean run to get into the field for eliminations tomorrow and bump Ferriolo from the field. There are no drivers left to run who are not in the top eight, so the rest of this session is for position only.

Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.940/236.38, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.791/247.20, Was #8
Right Lane: DJ Cox Jr. Runs 5.761/252.61, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.760/224.62, Was #5

Cox is running like a bracket racer, just one thousandth of a second difference between his two qualifying attempts. Tigges' run looked okay from the tower but was a lot slower than his first session attempt.

Left Lane: John Anderika Runs 5.737/251.44, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.737/249.21, Was #4
Right Lane: Paul Gill Runs 5.641/257.43, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.683/224.06, Was #2

Anderika ran the same ET as in the first session, so he'll stay where he was in the order. Gill was quicker than this afternoon, but not enough to move into the top spot in the order.

Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 15.163/60.26, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.707/252.14, Was #3
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.616/259.06, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.615/255.82, Was #1

Veney had a lot of problems getting out of the gate, so he just shut it down and coasted down the track. Manzo ran a thousandth of a second slower than the first session and stays in the top spot.
