Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, North Central Division, B'laster Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Karen Stalba Runs 6.213/229.12, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.314/198.61, Was #13
Right Lane: Ray Hack Runs 11.615/85.35, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.488/230.49, Was #14

4:34 p.m. Ken Perry is on the bump spot at 5.574.

Both cars dropped a couple of cylinders immediately. Stalba's car cleaned up a bit and started pulling at half track, but that was too late to do her any good. Hack struggled for about 300 feet, then lifted.

Left Lane: Dave Hill Runs 6.220/232.47, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.863/246.57, Was #12
Right Lane: Denny Hummel Runs 7.019/100.42, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.762/244.43, Was #11

Both cars eased off the line, avoiding tire smoke but killing their ET. Hummel's car gave up with a POP and a flash of flame at half track, the safety mechanism deploying the chutes. Hill made a full pass, but failed to improve.

Left Lane: Jerry Powell Runs 13.952/65.54, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.537/262.44, Was #6
Right Lane: Brian Mans No Time, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.717/251.67, Was #10

Perry's 5.574 was still the time to beat for Mans, but the car surged forward as he staged and he rolled through the beams before stopping. Powell smoked the tires and lifted.

Left Lane: Mike Kosky Runs 5.724/252.61, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.519/260.91, Was #5
Right Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.568/257.53, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.619/256.21, Was #9

Samsel was the last car in the lanes with a chance to bump Perry from the field.

Both made good runs, Kosky not improving, but he negotiated the tricky left-lane launch pad with no shake or tire smoke. Samsel made a very nice run to replace Perry on the bump spot.

Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.450/262.28, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.498/259.46, Was #4
Right Lane: Ken Perry No Time, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.574/261.37, Was #9

Perry will have to wait for the last qualifying session to try to get back into the field, his crew shutting the engine off after the burnout.

Thacker showed that there was no problem with the left lane, making a nice run, four hundredths quicker than his run yesterday.

Right Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.654/241.97, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.549/251.20, Was #7

Hirata dropped one cylinder on the right side right at the start, losing about a tenth from yesterday.

Left Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.423/263.10, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.284/264.23, Was #1

Jared Dreher was in the lanes, but the crew towed the car back to the pits without even trying to fire the engine. Paul Fishburn didn't even make the trip to the staging lanes.

Reichert closed the round with the quickest run of the session.
