Extreme Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Extreme Pro Stock at the American Drag Racing League, ADRL Dragstock VIII listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 4.126/174.89, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.179/172.23, Was #21
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 4.164/173.81, Now #20; Best prior run: 4.266/169.83, Was #24

12:29 p.m. Following last night's tragic accident, the Extreme Pro Stock cars that were in the lanes began returning to the pits as word of Bert Jackson's passing was relayed from team to team.

The partially-completed round was wiped from the books, which left Jackson in the sixteenth qualifying position going into this final qualifying session.

His time will probably be eclipsed during this session, but Bert will not be "bumped from the field." If you check the side windows of the cars to see who's driving today, you will find Bert's name on all of them.

Godspeed, Bert Jackson.

Morton had a very good run last night, made another today and he's solidly in the field. Miller improved "a dime" but is still short of the mark.

Now Bob Bertsch is on the bump spot at 4.149.

Left Lane: Kevin Bealko Runs 4.162/172.76, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.163/172.34, Was #19

Bealko is using an automatic transmission. He made his best run of the weekend, but only by a thousandth of a second, and he's still three spots out of the field.

Right Lane: Brad Waddle Runs 4.145/174.39, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.206/172.06, Was #24

Waddle made a great last-chance run and bumped into the field. Now Trevor Eman is on the bump spot at 4.149.

Right Lane: David Schorr Runs 4.185/172.34, Now #24; Best prior run: 4.202/172.17, Was #24

Another best run of the weekend, but no brass ring.

Left Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 4.162/173.03, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.154/172.94, Was #19
Right Lane: Lester Cooper Runs 4.182/172.32, Now #23; Best prior run: 4.178/172.04, Was #23

Both cars were black tracking and using up a lot of their lane. Neither improved.

Left Lane: Trevor Eman Runs 4.139/175.66, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.149/175.43, Was #16

Eman was in the left lane, beside Bert Jackson, on Jackson's final run last night, and he was the single car in the missing-man formation the Pro Stock teams honored Jackson with during the memorial service this morning.

Eman improved, getting off the bump spot. Now Brad Waddle is on the bump spot at 4.145.

Left Lane: Steven Boone Runs 4.383/165.42, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.143/174.05, Was #15
Right Lane: Bob Bertsch Runs 4.140/174.46, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.149/174.57, Was #17

Bertsch was bumped from the field earlier in this session. His car made a hard move to the right on the launch, but he muscled it back to the groove and back into the field. That bumped Wddle, putting Steven Boone on the bump spot at 4.143.

Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 4.152/174.87, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.135/174.71, Was #11
Right Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 4.164/174.93, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.140/175.02, Was #14

The remaining drivers are already qualified (except for Rocky Watford, who should have run by now). Two not-so-straight runs, no improvement.

Left Lane: Cale Aronson Runs 4.177/173.74, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.131/174.57, Was #10
Right Lane: Scott Hintz Runs 4.136/175.18, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.139/174.01, Was #13

Aronson made a big left turn on the launch, way out of the groove. Hintz made his best run of the weekend, moved up one spot.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Jr Runs 4.169/175.21, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.122/174.89, Was #7
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 4.125/174.98, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.122/174.64, Was #8

Another left turn in the left lane for no improvement. Gahm also failed to improve, but his three runs have been very consistent, between 4.122 and 4.133.

Left Lane: John Pluchino Runs 4.160/175.73, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.118/175.43, Was #5
Right Lane: Pete Berner Runs 4.163/174.87, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.120/175.27, Was #6

Pluchino went straight down the left lane, did not improve, and Berner went right down the middle of the right lane, also did not improve.

Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 7.311/72.00, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.103/176.01, Was #3
Right Lane: Richard Penland Runs 7.864/53.80, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.117/175.37, Was #4

Both cars shook violently, both got very sideways, and both shut off quickly.

Left Lane: Cary Goforth Runs 4.130/176.37, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.102/176.40, Was #2
Right Lane: Dean Goforth Runs 9.189/48.36, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.099/175.39, Was #1

The #1 and #2 spots will be Father-Son act, with Dad leading coming into this session. It took Dean two tries to get a decent burnout, Cary managed it on his first try.

Dean had a lot of tire spin on the launch and he lifted quickly. Cary made a full pass, did not improve. The three quickest in this session were Gahm, Morton and Cary Goforth.
