Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 46th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Joran Persaker No Time, Now #24; Best prior run: 9.329/79.10, Was #24

4:37 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 24 percent, barometer 28.93 inches, adjusted altitude 2,424 feet, track temperature 88 degrees.

Last chance to qualify in 2010. Ron August is on the bump spot at 4.019.

Persaker leaves hard, but the car is almost immediately in trouble. By 330ft. the car begins to move steadily towards the center line and then nails both of the 1000 foot reflectors. That DQ's his 4.009 ET and 275.510 MPH and the new bump spot goes back to August.

Joran Persaker's incremental times: 60ft-0.878 sec., 330ft-2.243, 660ft-3.188/267.37 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Cullinan Runs 4.012/295.46, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.114/269.78, Was #20
Right Lane: Lex Joon No Time, Now #25; No Prior Run

Joon's car has bad popping and banging out of the #5 cylinder after starting the engine. The team quickly shuts the engine off and pushes the car away.

Cullinan lays down a great looking pass, but just misses the bump spot.

Tim Cullinan's incremental times: 60ft-0.877 sec., 330ft-2.227, 660ft-3.196/258.07 mph.

Left Lane: Ron August Runs 3.915/313.44, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.019/275.00, Was #18
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 3.953/301.40, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.186/130.92, Was #24

Both teams have been struggling, but not this time. Two great looking passes get both cars into the field for now.

A new career best ET and speed for August.

Ron August's incremental times: 60ft-0.873 sec., 330ft-2.205, 660ft-3.139/271.24 mph.
Troy Buff's incremental times: 60ft-0.873 sec., 330ft-2.225, 660ft-3.159/270.43 mph.

Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 3.897/306.05, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.007/301.47, Was #17
Right Lane: Chris Karamesines Runs 3.987/303.23, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.527/178.24, Was #24

Scott Palmer is on the bump spot at 3.991.

Two more clean and straight passes. The Greek's ET was good enough to qualify, but McMillen pushed him back out.

Terry McMillen's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.183, 660ft-3.112/271.84 mph.
Chris Karamesines' incremental times: 60ft-0.878 sec., 330ft-2.241, 660ft-3.192/267.59 mph.

Left Lane: Scott Palmer Runs 4.087/249.44, Now #18; Best prior run: 3.991/292.52, Was #18
Right Lane: Stig Neergaard Runs 6.173/108.12, Now #24; Best prior run: 4.253/224.62, Was #24

Morgan Lucas is on the bump spot at 3.960.

No joy for either team, as Neergaard smokes the tires and Palmer can't improve.

Scott Palmer's incremental times: 60ft-0.867 sec., 330ft-2.225, 660ft-3.196/254.52 mph.

Left Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 3.932/303.03, Now #13; Best prior run: 3.943/309.20, Was #14
Right Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 6.901/105.30, Now #23; Best prior run: 4.246/226.70, Was #23

Strasburg gets a great looking pass and moves up the ladder by one position. Chrisman is strong off the line and then the engine goes silent before the 330 lights.

Mike Strasburg's incremental times: 60ft-0.866 sec., 330ft-2.218, 660ft-3.150/273.00 mph.

Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 3.928/298.60, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.068/264.70, Was #22

Strong pass from start to finish and Grubnic takes a 0.853 sixty foot time and bumps Morgan out of the field for now,

Lagana slows from his best and is pushed down a spot too.

Dom Lagana's incremental times: 60ft-0.871 sec., 330ft-2.237, 660ft-3.197/261.47 mph.
David Grubnic's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.177, 660ft-3.120/265.01 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 7.885/78.66, Now #12; Best prior run: 3.927/306.46, Was #12
Right Lane: Mark Mariani Runs 4.187/266.64, Now #22; Best prior run: 4.057/286.01, Was #22

Troy Buff is on the bump spot at 3.953.

Vandergriff leaves hard and then the flames go out. Mariani makes a full pass, but no improvement.

Mark Mariani's incremental times: 60ft-0.877 sec., 330ft-2.279, 660ft-3.302/245.81 mph.

Left Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 3.860/312.06, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.892/311.63, Was #6
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.829/317.49, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.960/302.48, Was #17

Last chance for Team Geico and huge pass to move the car all the way up to the new #2 spot. It's a career best speed to boot! Neat!

Torrance improves too, but is pushed back to the current number seven spot.

Steve Torrence's incremental times: 60ft-0.845 sec., 330ft-2.164, 660ft-3.083/273.94 mph.
Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.162, 660ft-3.066/278.75 mph.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.848/318.32, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.853/317.87, Was #6
Right Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 4.606/163.02, Now #12; Best prior run: 3.918/310.77, Was #12

Dom Lagana is on the bump spot at 3.939, but there isn't anyone left to bump him out.

Zizzo gets away first and smokes the tire down track.

MnClennathan has the tune up and makes another strong pass up the ladder to the new #5 spot.

Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.845 sec., 330ft-2.166, 660ft-3.083/275.00 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.859/313.58, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.849/316.01, Was #6
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.858/317.49, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.905/312.28, Was #10

A great side by side pass for the fans with ET's only a 0.001 difference in the lights. Brown gets the best of it, as he moves into the top half of the field in the #7 position.

Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.852 sec., 330ft-2.171, 660ft-3.089/275.67 mph.
Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.182, 660ft-3.096/278.35 mph.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.822/319.90, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.840/316.30, Was #4
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.851/307.79, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.895/314.83, Was #9

...and the hits keep coming!

Kalitta gets away first and pulls steadily ahead all the way down the track to move into the new #2 spot for now.

Bernstein gets what he needed as the run is good enough to move him back into the top half of the field.

Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.161, 660ft-3.065/279.90 mph.
Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.851 sec., 330ft-2.157, 660ft-3.072/275.56 mph.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 9.630/76.09, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.813/318.39, Was #1
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.794/322.88, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.840/320.58, Was #4

Last pair of cars to attempt to make a qualifying pass in 2010.

Bragging rights and some more "Little Points" for Schumacher, as the Army Team gives him a great tune up that turns into the top speed by over four MPH and the final top spot. The only pass into the seventies this weekend. The National Record comes into play tomorrow, as this would be a valid backup pass.

Dixon's car was up in smoke at the hit and it's all over for the Al-Anabi team.

Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.837 sec., 330ft-2.147, 660ft-3.045/283.19 mph.

5:27 p.m. Dom Lagana is on the bump spot at 3.939.
