GLENDORA, Calif. -- The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) announced today its NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule for the 2004 season, which features a return to all venues currently on the 2003 schedule.

Highlighting the 2004 schedule is a move to a later opening date. The K&N Filters Winternationals will launch the season Feb. 19-22, at Pomona (Calif.) Raceway.

Another change on the schedule is the K&N Filters NHRA SuperNationals at Englishtown, N.J., which moves from its current mid-May date to June 17-20.

The Western Swing, which features events at Denver, Seattle and Sonoma, Calif., highlights four individual sets of three consecutive weekends of racing.

"The biggest change in the 2004 NHRA POWERade Series schedule is the move of the opening race weekend to the middle of February," said Tom Compton, NHRA president. "By doing this, it will allow the teams more time during the offseason to prepare for the NHRA POWERade championship chase."

Additional three race swings will take place in May, June and September. In May, the three-race swing includes the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals (May 13-16) at Commerce, Ga.; Lucas Oil NHRA Route 66 Nationals (May 20-23) in Chicago; and the O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals (May 27-30) on Memorial Day weekend at Topeka, Kan. The June trio features the Pontiac Excitement NHRA Nationals (June 10-13) at Columbus, Ohio; K&N Filters NHRA SuperNationals; and the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals (June 25-27) at St. Louis. The September swing includes the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals (Sept. 16-19) at Reading Pa.; O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals (Sept. 24-26) at Memphis, Tenn.; and the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals (Sept. 30-Oct. 3) at Chicago.

The Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the most prestigious championship drag racing event in the world, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2004. The race will be held at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Sept. 1-6.

All NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events will feature competition in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock. Pro Stock Bike will again be featured at 15 events, including Gainesville, Fla.; Houston; Commerce, Ga.; Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; Englishtown, N.J.; St. Louis; Denver; Sonoma, Calif.; Brainerd, Minn.; Indianapolis; Reading, Pa.; Memphis, Tenn.; Las Vegas and Pomona, Calif.

ESPN and ESPN2 will again provide television coverage of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series on a same-day tape or live basis.
