By Dave Rowe

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 16th annual O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Richard Hartman Runs 7.677/116.17, Now #1

4:11 PM Hartman hits the throttle, loses traction and goes up in smoke.

Current weather conditions: 69 degrees, 73 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.10 inches, with a track temperature of 94 degrees.

The track record is 4.824, set in 2001 by John Force. It probably won't survive this round, the weather almost perfect. A good run for both cars, side-by-side all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.117/293.15, Now #4
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.406/219.26, Now #5

Cannon gets about 300 feet out, starts hazing the tires and has to pedal. Gilbertson started mixing up cylinders just before he went through the lights.

Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.097/262.44, Now #5
Right Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 5.015/284.15, Now #3

Skuza was on a decent run until half-track, ahead of Pedregon at that point, then starts mixing up cylinders. Pedregon started mixing up cylinders near the end of the run and shut down just before he crossed the finish line.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.031/303.91, Now #5
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.984/286.25, Now #2

Pedregon gets out of the groove, drifts toward the center-line, then starts mixing up cylinders about 1200 feet out.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 10.291/83.12, Now #13
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 8.303/97.80, Now #12

Trouble for both cars, Scelzi up in smoke first , then followed by Johnson.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 6.292/139.24, Now #11
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.926/312.64, Now #2

Capps gets about 400 feet out and goes up in smoke. Worsham goes right down the groove and gets in the number two spot for now.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.856/311.99, Now #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 6.056/181.79, Now #12

Force gets about 200 feet out, loses traction, pedals once, then gives up on the run. No problems for Densham, right down the groove, header flames high and steady all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 9.286/88.27, Now #18
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.208/287.41, Now #11

Bazemore gets about 200 feet out, starts shaking the tires and goes up in smoke. Pedregon gets a little further, loses traction, pedals three or four times and runs well enough to get in the field.
