Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual O'Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 4.262/278.86, Now #13; No Prior Run

12:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 55 percent, barometer 29.54 inches, adjusted altitude 2,666 feet, track temperature 109 degrees.

Bartone makes his first full pass of the weekend and gets in the show for now.


Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.334/181.57, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.270/244.12, Now #14; No Prior Run

Head gets about 200 feet out and strikes the tires. Neff was on a decent pass but the car nosed over just before the finish line.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.478/272.23, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 4.776/168.94, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.126/300.13, Was #12

This could be Scelzi's last race at the Motorplex. He says he will be retiring at the end of the season.

Scelzi hit the throttle but had a hole out all the way through the run. Toliver had problems near the end of the run and the car nosed over.


Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 5.060/201.97, Now #16; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.241/273.72, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.123/299.73, Was #11

Johnson gets about 400 feet out and strikes the tires, but he still gets in on the bump for now. Capps makes a clean pass but doesn't improve from yesterday.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.206/290.82, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.219/290.07, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.120/299.00, Was #10

A good side-by-side here, both cars right down the groove. Tasca gets in the field in the 13th spot with the quickest pass of the session so far.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.175/292.14, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 6.139/104.63, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.113/303.71, Was #9

Arend gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Densham makes a great pass here, easily the best of the round so far, and he gets in the show in the 13th spot.

Mike Neff is on the bump spot at 4.270.


Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.183/294.75, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.109/301.33, Was #7
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.605/192.69, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.110/300.20, Was #8

Force goes right down the groove with another good run and he stays in the seventh spot. Pedregon has traction problems just as he did in the right lane yesterday. he gets a little further this time, about 400 feet out, then he strikes the tires and has to click it off.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.758/165.82, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.099/300.00, Was #5
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.186/297.48, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.099/299.66, Was #6

Beckman gets about 400 feet out and goes up in smoke. Wilkerson was drifting to the left all the way through the run, then gets clost to the center line just before the end of the run.

Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 4.305/231.40, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.092/304.46, Was #2
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.660/183.10, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.096/304.67, Was #4

Force wason a decent pass, then has traction problems near the end of the run. Troxel gets about 500 feet out and strikes the tires.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 6.468/96.58, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.063/301.81, Was #1
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.202/292.52, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.092/303.03, Was #3

Hight gets about 200 feet out and strikes the tires. Worsham goes right down the groove with a decent pass. One session to go, Hight is on the pole, Mike Neff is on the bump spot at 4.270, Scelzi, Johnson and Head are on the outside looking in.
