Competition Eliminator Qualifying Notes, Session #1

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:
Left Lane: Steve Matusek Runs 6.498/221.09/-0.872, Now #1 BB/AT Index: 7.37
Right Lane: Terry Smith Runs 7.576/173.01/-0.414, Now #2 D/ED Index: 7.99

Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 75 percent, barometer 29.52 inches, adjusted altitude 2,403 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

4:32 p.m. Comp's first session is about to get started. The clouds have been really low all day, we have experienced a few drizzles earlier today, but we have been good so far.

Matusek lays down a really string pass to open the weekend. Smith a very smooth run from him in the dragster.


Left Lane: Jeff Wright Runs 7.214/190.22/-0.426, Now #2 B/AA Index: 7.64
Right Lane: Alan Rose Runs 8.353/160.27/-0.307, Now #4 C/EA Index: 8.66

Wright wiggles a little off the line. Rose is straight down the track.

Left Lane: Keith Roberts Runs 9.304/145.33/-0.436, Now #2 I/SMA Index: 9.74
Right Lane: Doc Bilbrey Runs 10.735/92.56/2.725, Now #6 PST Index: 8.01

Bilbrey shuts his car off early. Roberts moves into the 2nd spot for now.

Left Lane: Allen Stanfield Runs 8.939/151.83/-0.441, Now #2 G/SM Index: 9.38
Right Lane: Glen Treadwell Runs 8.691/136.00/0.001, Now #7 E/EA Index: 8.69

Stanfield makes a nice looking pass to open his weekend here at ZMax Dragway. Treadwell is off the gas early.

Left Lane: Pat Williams Runs 7.156/194.32/-0.134, Now #8 A/AP Index: 7.29
Right Lane: Mark Linebarrier Runs 7.590/178.97/-0.390, Now #6 C/A Index: 7.98



Left Lane: Bill Scott Runs 7.170/190.22/-0.220, Now #9 B/DA Index: 7.39
Right Lane: Ray Vierheller III Runs 7.475/174.50/-0.515, Now #2 D/ED Index: 7.99

Vierheller spins the tires a bit at the start, but is able to still make good opening pass.

Left Lane: Mike Saye Runs 8.759/154.17/-0.481, Now #4 H/A Index: 9.24
Right Lane: Brian Browell Runs 7.191/182.87/-0.629, Now #2 D/D Index: 7.82

Both drivers make solid runs in this pair. Browell will move into the 2nd spot for the time being.

Left Lane: Pat Ross Runs 8.187/164.57/-0.493, Now #4 F/A Index: 8.68
Right Lane: Van Puckett Runs 8.275/162.98/-0.365, Now #11 F/AA Index: 8.64

Ross goes straight down the track. Puckett was a little off the pace at the big end.

Left Lane: Larry Pritchett Runs 13.360/65.50/4.930, Now #17 A/SM Index: 8.43
Right Lane: Fred Gallo No Time, Now #18 A/AA Index: 7.17

Gallo is shut off before his burnout. The starting line crew is mopping up some fluid. Pritchett launches the wheels in the air and the shuts the car off before 300 ft.

Left Lane: Bruno Massel Runs 7.473/182.60/-0.467, Now #7 DD/AT Index: 7.94
Right Lane: Jake Crimmins Runs 6.534/217.18/-0.536, Now #3 AA/AM Index: 7.07

An interesting pair we have here. Massell drives the turbo car, Crimmins is driving a funny car style Comp car. I would say it looks like an "econo-alcohol funny car". Crimmins makes very nice pass and he goes into the top five for now. Massell makes a strong showing here in the first session of qualifying.

Left Lane: John Frech Runs 8.523/155.02/-0.127, Now #18 F/D Index: 8.65
Right Lane: Rick Brown Runs 8.308/161.13/-0.572, Now #3 B/TA Index: 8.88

Brown and his truck look good with their first run of the weekend. Frech will be looking for a little more when he comes back out tomorrow.

Left Lane: Richard Schonberger Runs 8.289/161.23/-0.531, Now #5 I/A Index: 8.82
Right Lane: Don Eckel III Runs 7.049/189.82/-0.451, Now #10 C/D Index: 7.50

Eckel puts the wheels in the air with the dragster. Schonberger makes a solid run.

Left Lane: Gary Wisecarver No Time, Now #25 H/SM Index: 9.56
Right Lane: Elio Mannino Runs 7.393/184.57/-0.247, Now #18 B/AA Index: 7.64

Wisecarver is shut off after his burnout, he appeared to be leaking some fluid. Mannino makes a straight pass in the Mustang.

Left Lane: Doug Doll Jr. Runs 8.357/156.70/-0.473, Now #9 F/ED Index: 8.83
Right Lane: Gary Merrick Runs 7.560/174.50/-0.310, Now #18 C/ED Index: 7.87



Left Lane: David Eaton Runs 7.424/193.57/0.134, Now #26 A/AP Index: 7.29
Right Lane: Jerry Hemmingson Runs 7.173/190.86/-0.467, Now #11 B/A Index: 7.64

Eaton makes a move towards the wall at the hit, but pulls his car back into the middle of the lane.

Left Lane: Al Ackerman Runs 8.145/163.55/-0.505, Now #7 F/D Index: 8.65
Right Lane: Bill Yates Runs 7.244/199.26/0.024, Now #27 A/ED Index: 7.22

Ackerman with nice looking run. Yates was off the gas before the finish-line.

Left Lane: Tony Terry Runs 8.090/168.18/-0.550, Now #4 F/AA Index: 8.64
Right Lane: Frank Cervelli Runs 7.177/185.64/-0.453, Now #14 C/DA Index: 7.63

Terry makes a great looking run and he goes into the top five on the qualifying sheet for now.

Right Lane: David Rampy Runs 8.655/141.43/0.785, Now #32 A/EA Index: 7.87



Left Lane: Jim Kimbrough Runs 7.207/184.72/-0.423, Now #20 C/DA Index: 7.63
Right Lane: Peter Biondo Runs 9.155/147.13/-0.585, Now #3 C/AA Index: 9.74

Biondo pulls the wheels up, and he moves into the 3rd spot on the sheet for the moment.

Right Lane: Arnie Martel Runs 7.877/166.76/-0.563, Now #5 B/SR Index: 8.44
