Top Fuel Round 2 Eliminations
By Michael L Jex

CLERMONT, Ind. - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals:

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
3 Brandon Bernstein 22 Doug Kalitta
E2 0.098 6.479 144.44 ****WINNER**** 0.083 5.447 229.04
 Prior rounds:
E1 (R Fuller ) 0.090 3.906 310.98 (J Todd ) 0.104 3.957 304.12
 Qualified: #4 3.868 311.99 #12 3.901 309.70
1:12 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.22 inches, adjusted altitude 3,028 feet, track temperature 119 degrees.

Bernstein leads 12-10 in races with Kalitta, and 4-2 when they have faced in the 2nd round.

SMOKEFEST! PEDALFAST! Both drivers lit up the big good years, Brandon lit up the tires right at the hit, Kalitta lost traction just a moment later. Both drivers pedaled at least three times, we had red dragsters all over their own lanes trying to find some traction. Kalitta's motor finally expired just as he went past the stripe and won going away. It wasn't fast, but the crowd loved it here at Indy.

796 Cory McClenathan 6 Doug Herbert
E2 ****WINNER**** 0.089 4.521 244.38 0.069 5.041 270.37

 Qualified: #2 3.852 312.57 #7 3.878 312.06
Cory Mac leads 20-14 in races against Herbert, but Herbert leads 6-5 when he's raced Cory Mac in the 2nd round...

For the 2nd pair in a row we had another pedal and smoke spectacular. Cory did a great job feathering the throttle but spinning the tires the whole way, Herbert got the goodyears hooked back up after letting the car coast for a bit. It the track had been longer Herbert might have had room to catch the Fram car, but he ran out of racetrack before he could regain the lost distance.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
123 Antron Brown 91 Larry Dixon
E2 ****WINNER**** 0.095 3.894 309.13 0.061 3.954 295.27
 Prior rounds:
E1 (D Grubnic ) 0.094 3.870 308.50 (T Buff ) 0.086 3.909 308.71
 Qualified: #8 3.878 309.91 #1 3.841 307.23
Bragging rights are at stake here - Brown and Dixon are 2-2 in heads up matches. Both teams get the first full pulls of the session, Antron didn't get past Dixon till the top end, he streaked by after the halfway point.

Dixon's going home, and he's got the 2nd quickest ET of the round...

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
1 Tony Schumacher 48 Hillary Will
E2 ****WINNER**** 0.080 3.897 314.31 0.105 4.130 232.23
 Prior rounds:
E1 (B Vandergrif) 0.068 3.842 316.90 (S Torrence ) 0.064 3.914 310.13
 Qualified: #6 3.877 313.58 #3 3.854 314.53
Will has raced Schumacher six times, but has never beaten Tony...

Make it 22 round wins! Tony now has the longest round wins in a row in Top Fuel history, and there are two more rounds he has the chance to add to the total. Will had a good run early, but lost traction at the top end of the track.

Tony will have lane choice against Cory Mac in the semis. 1:27 p.m.
