POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 43nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 5.019/287.11, Now #21; Best prior run: 12.864/87.15, Was #22
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.576/325.45, Now #11; Best prior run: 10.941/77.44, Was #21

2:39 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 28.93 inches, adjusted altitude 2,692 feet, track temperature 102 degrees. Clay Millican is on the bump spot at 4.764.

Chrisman gets near a full pull and still won't get in this session. Lucas steps up and hits a double to move well into the field for now. It was announce here at noon today that J.R. Todd will join him in the SCORE Tecate Baja 1000 race later this year in a 2008 Penhall Class 1 Diablo for Hullinger Motorsports. My kidneys hurt just thinking about it!

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.593/322.96, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.893/219.90, Was #20
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.574/314.83, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.508/95.70, Was #22

Rod Fuller is on the bump spot at 4.643. Two more strong passes and both cars get into the field for now in the #10 and 15 spots.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.806/297.68, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.764/320.66, Was #19
Right Lane: Urs Erbacher No Time, Now #21; Best prior run: 4.849/297.88, Was #21

Scotty Cannon is now on the bump spot at 4.600. Erbacher is up in smoke at the hit and stops on the track after the finish line. Millican's car was not thundering at the hit and made a bunch of small parts out of a few big ones in the lights. The clean up crew is out in force to check the track and pick up any spare pieces.

Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 8.642/98.63, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.643/265.85, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 4.880/241.84, Now #20; Best prior run: 4.806/241.37, Was #20

2:49 p.m. That was brief and a freebie for Millican.

The Countdown to Championship Points Leader is currently in the #18 spot and may be a little worried.

If he wasn't before, he is now. The CAT car has a safe leave and then strikes the tires before the 330 lights. Strasburg loses the rubber band and the noise stopped early.

Left Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.659/157.69, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.600/317.64, Was #16
Right Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 5.047/210.37, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.608/321.81, Was #17

Cannon loses the belt and slows to stay on the bump. Hartley had better times and then dropped some cylinders down track.

Left Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 4.600/324.36, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.589/323.27, Was #14
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.525/309.27, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.579/326.87, Was #13

Clean pass for Bradshaw and another 320 MPH to stay #14. Troxel leaves with a strong 0.858 sixty foot time and powers into the top half of the field in the current #3 spot Both cars had a lot of smoke in the lights.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.608/319.14, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.566/321.50, Was #8
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 7.171/105.30, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.574/313.73, Was #12

Grubnic strikes the tires right after the 330 lights. Cory Mac runs another strong pass and keeps the #8 spot.

3:00 p.m. The trucks roll to just pass the finish line in the left lane and start the dusting and cleaning. No free one this time!

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 9.972/76.24, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.543/324.51, Was #6
Right Lane: Hillary Will Runs 5.483/166.03, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.573/328.94, Was #10

3:08 p.m. ... and we are back. The oildown was expensive for the new team owner Cory McClenathan, after a big hit at Vegas 2 and $4,000 here

Will has bounced back from her DQ at Vegas Two, but went over center on this pass. After a 0.864 sixty foot time the tire were up in smoke right after the 660 lights. Vandergriff had a good leave too, but kicked the tires right after the 60 foot lights.

Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 11.063/78.67, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.540/330.72, Was #5
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 6.481/127.93, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.572/323.50, Was #9

Foley's engine goes silent right after the hit. Dixon gets further down track and then smokes the tires.

Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.549/328.22, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.529/329.83, Was #4
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 11.379/75.59, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.544/323.04, Was #7

Great pass for the conditions for Bernstein. Another low four fifty and he will stay #4. Schumacher has a respectable 0.862 sixty foot time and then the engine goes silent.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 6.907/118.32, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.521/328.22, Was #1
Right Lane: David Baca Runs 4.568/329.50, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.523/329.18, Was #2

Earlier today, Lucas Oil announced that J.R. would be joining Morgan in TF next year replacing Melanie Troxel. Seeley Wright Auto Group will be the primary sponsor.

Big flare from the headers on Todd's car as it strikes the tires before mid-track. Baca shows consistency with another fast and quick pass.

3:18 p.m. J.R. Todd stays #1 and Scotty Cannon is on the bump spot at 4.600.
