POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 43nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.852/252.38, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 6.652/162.14, Now #23; Best prior run: 9.777/91.42, Was #24
1:02 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 45 percent, barometer 28.95 inches, adjusted altitude 2,370 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.
We had some pretty spectacular performances from the dragsters with the top three in the 5.20s. Let's see if the Funny Cars are as
happy with the Pomona conditions. Williamson has some pretty nasty shake that lets one of the parachutes out of his pack at 60ft. He
dragged the laundry all the way to the lights and managed to slap the finish line marker out of the way. Taylor makes a tough field
in a very ominous #14. That bumped Gasparrelli.
Left Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 6.082/245.85, Now #23; Best prior run: 10.178/85.47, Was #26
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.656/257.14, Now #3; Best prior run: 8.614/96.29, Was #25
De Joria uses almost all of the left lane but it's Gordon's banzai that takes him all the way to #3. Not bad for coming into the run #25!
Left Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.726/255.48, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.781/135.74, Was #26
Right Lane: John Patton Runs 9.262/93.51, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.403/167.84, Was #24
Parker is now on the bump at 5.865. Patton rattled the tires hard and his racer would have liked to swap ends on him. August goes from #26 to top half of the field at this time. Nice looking run! Now Taylor is on the bump and he opened this session.
Left Lane: Paul Crifasi Runs 6.066/242.19, Now #22; Best prior run: 5.973/241.84, Was #22
Right Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 9.935/87.73, Now #23; Best prior run: 5.996/242.50, Was #23
The question is...which of these cars shook the hardest at the hit. Coolidge likely wins that contest as all he could do is lift and coast on out. Crifasi pedaled a couple of times and will need that final qualifying session.
Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.901/251.34, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.925/247.38, Was #20
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.819/253.61, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.926/250.69, Was #21
Woz went whack...whack on the pedal and that costs him a spot in the field. Thompson was just a bit stronger and manages to crack the field and bump Taylor. That puts Moats on the bubble.
Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 7.360/103.73, Now #21; Best prior run: 5.908/236.13, Was #21
Right Lane: Russ Parker Runs 12.596/79.18, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.865/250.23, Was #18
Gasparrelli's early numbers looked good enough to get him in but the burst panel lifted high into the air, followed by a loud bang. Parker rattled the tires hard and Parker was forced to call this one off.
Left Lane: Marty Nothstein Runs 5.833/243.41, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.866/242.10, Was #19
Right Lane: Larry Miner Runs 6.832/134.42, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.839/248.25, Was #15
That was a nasty blower explosion for Miner that resulted in pieces of the body, other than the burst panel, coming off. Actually it might have been the burst panel that broke in two. Nothstein makes matters worse by putting Miner down a spot to the bump.
Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 8.421/97.66, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.846/252.52, Was #17
Right Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.718/253.90, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.838/254.62, Was #15
Moats was just bumped and this run won't help him. He used all the left lane and after he lifted the blower belt came slithering out from under his racer. O'Bannon really picks up his pace and he goes top half.
Left Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 5.654/251.49, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.834/246.66, Was #15
Right Lane: Steve Burck Runs 5.882/244.29, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.823/248.16, Was #13
Rupert goes all the way to #3, even though there was lots of smoke from the engine in the lights. They fire the next pair so there's no debris on the track. Burck falls off from his first hit and Rupert pushes him one spot closer to the bump.
Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.676/252.85, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.818/239.19, Was #12
Right Lane: Ken Kraus Runs 7.739/123.88, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.818/246.57, Was #11
Kraus was all over the lane before he lifted for good. Hough lays down a 5.6 and finds himself into the top half.
Left Lane: Kebin Kinsley Runs 5.675/253.71, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.712/251.25, Was #7
Right Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 5.749/223.28, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.787/221.38, Was #11
Kinsley also drag races on water and managed to win a championship in one of the boat groups last weekend. I understand that next week he'll be looking to do the same with a different organization. This weekend it's asphalt and he puts the Camaro into the top half of the field. Harrington stays #11.
Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.708/255.15, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.681/256.31, Was #7
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.979/210.08, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.723/254.71, Was #9
Payne can't pull off the double as he remains #7 here in Alcohol Funny Car. He's #1 qualifier in Comp in his AA/PM. Bellemeur gets pretty loose and has to lift.
Left Lane: Jeff Carroll Runs 13.746/95.37, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.641/249.03, Was #1
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.589/258.12, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.649/255.05, Was #2
Smith certainly figured out this place pretty well. He goes into the 5.5s and all the way to the pole. Carroll left a couple of dotted lines at the start and shut it off. That closes out session 2 for the alky cars.
