Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 22st annual O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.514/190.00, Now #1

4:33 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 93 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 29.30 inches, adjusted altitude 3,235 feet, track temperature 124 degrees.

Toliver was on a decent pass, then loses traction about 800 feet down, the rear of the car starts to come around, then he clicks it off.

Left Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 6.268/144.00, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 7.038/120.48, Now #3

A couple of decent runs until about 400 feet, then both strikes the tires and shut down.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.648/198.00, Now #3
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.028/263.82, Now #1

Wilkerson almost makes a full pass, getting about 1100 feet down before striking the tires. Densham goes up in smoke about 300 feet out and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.009/291.51, Now #1
Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 6.298/146.27, Now #6

Force had the quickest pass of the round to the 300, then strikes the tires. Pedregon hazes the tries near the end of the run but still makes the quickest pass of the session.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 9.226/83.56, Now #9
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 5.169/282.90, Now #3

Arend strikes the tires about 300 feet out and strikes the tires. Bernstein hazes the tires around half-track but stays on the throttle.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 7.545/116.13, Now #10
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.958/313.37, Now #1

Johnson strikes the tires about 300 feet out and has to click it off. Worsham makes an impressive run, no tire smoke and the quickest pass of the session so far.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.558/186.56, Now #7
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.040/278.75, Now #4

Head loses traction, starts skating around, then finally gives up on the run about 800 feet out. Force gets about 800 feet out, starts hazing the tires, stays on the throttle, then smoke starts pouring out of the headers as he goes through the lights.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 5.004/300.93, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.306/265.48, Now #7

Pedregon gets about 400 feet out, hazes the tires, pedals once and goes on through with a decent pass for this round. Ashley makes it down the tough left lane to get in the field in the second spot. Ashley will be observing Yom Kippur and will not make any qualifying passes tomorrow.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.960/307.02, Now #2
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.966/302.01, Now #3

Our first complete side-by-side, both go right down the groove, stuck together all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.988/308.00, Now #4
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.935/158.73, Now #14

Hight gets about 700 feet out and strikes the tires. Beckman makes a great pass to get in the fourth spot to end this round of qualifying.
