Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 20th annual O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 6.392/136.08, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.920/312.28, Was #12

1:43 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 86 degrees, relative humidity 21 percent, barometer 29.96 inches, adjusted altitude 1,857 feet, track temperature 112 degrees.

Worsham hits the throttle, shakes the tires, then has to abort the run about 400 feet out.


Left Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.908/304.74, Now #10; Best prior run: 8.111/166.91, Was #19
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.978/119.31, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.507/191.19, Was #17

Pedregon shakes the tires at the hit, gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. He will go into the last round not qualified. Bernstein makes a clean run and gets in the field in the tenth spot.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 10.222/84.48, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.915/309.84, Was #11
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 6.891/122.01, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.954/301.74, Was #17

Tire shake strikes again. Arend makes a move to the right and he clicks it off just past the sixty foot mark. Scelzi gets a little further then clicks it off about 250 feet out. Pedregon and Scelzi, both in the countdown, both not qualified yet.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.890/305.98, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.828/105.93, Was #19
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.956/289.76, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.933/293.66, Was #16

Pedregon gets past half-track, the car makes a move to the left, but he hangs on to make a decent pass and get in the field. Wilkerson can't improve and gets bumped out of the field.

The Safety Safari heads out to the track. Apparently Wilkerson deposited something on the track just past the finish line.


Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.963/295.34, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.927/319.37, Was #16
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 7.972/97.79, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.887/304.80, Was #8

Toliver gets about 300 feet out and strikes the tires. Head makes a clean pass but doesn't improve and stays on the bump.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 6.718/125.00, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.922/267.64, Was #15
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.851/313.73, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.873/311.99, Was #7

Bartone was on a decent pass, then loses traction about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Beckman makes his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up a few notches.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 4.921/307.51, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.916/311.13, Was #13
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 9.085/85.42, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.867/302.69, Was #6

Ashley was on a decent pass, then the engine starts eating itself up about 700 feet out. Johnson has traction problems early and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.933/154.94, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.898/309.06, Was #10
Right Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 9.836/84.81, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.852/311.85, Was #5

Kalitta rattles the tires off the line and clicks it off about 200 feet out. Densham gets just past half track and the car noses over, not sure why.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.905/304.94, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.869/311.70, Was #7
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.063/224.47, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.811/314.02, Was #2

Hight leaves first and stays out in front until the 1000 foot mark, then the car noses over. Capps makes a full pull but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.843/312.64, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.821/316.45, Was #3
Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 4.876/309.49, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.810/316.38, Was #1

It's Force and Force. John leaves first and starts to pull away. Ashley does a great job of driving here, the rear of the car getting loose early on, then starts to drift to the left. The car continues to move around but she never backs off the throttle. She gets close to the center-line just before she crosses the finish-line but hangs on for a good pass..
