Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 53rd annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Fred Hagen Runs 5.642/258.42, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.752/257.68, Was #15

11:49 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 29.25 inches, adjusted altitude 2,293 feet, track temperature 97 degrees. Not a lot of changes in TAD, so this may be a "hard to improve" round.Daniel Wilkerson is on the bump spot at 5.754.

Looks like I'm wrong! Hagen runs a careen best ET to move way up the ladder to the current #6 spot in the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 6.439/144.88, Now #23; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Steve Burck Runs 10.965/75.74, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.035/235.56, Was #20

Well, that was ugly! Burck gets way loose off the line and clicks it. Martin had much better bottom end numbers and then had the parachute blossom before mid-track. Neither car will improve.

11:54 a.m. Looks like Martin needs to work on toilet training his car, as the safety team is out mopping and sweeping in his lane right off the line.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.691/257.28, Now #11; Best prior run: 9.887/88.71, Was #26
Right Lane: David Ray Runs 8.791/100.38, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.718/253.37, Was #12

11:58 a.m. ...and we are back.

I don't know if this is another Mustang body for Payne, but the right rear quarter panel doesn't show any scars from yesterdays little bounce off the guardrail.

Payne bumps in with a nice looking pass well into the field. Ray was soft off the line and gives it up early.

Left Lane: Steve Franke Runs 6.282/234.21, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.551/221.27, Was #25
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.553/263.51, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.564/261.12, Was #1

John Bojec is on the bump spot at 5.722. Manzo fires another shot at the field and moves the number one spot further away from them. Franke picks up over two tenths, but only one spot on the ladder.

Left Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.713/250.09, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.720/241.71, Was #15
Right Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 5.853/244.21, Now #18; Best prior run: 8.596/171.42, Was #26

Snyder tunes it up and moves further away from the bump. Butler finally gets a baseline pass and will have something to tune from tomorrow.

Left Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 5.868/249.49, Now #19; Best prior run: 17.342/39.57, Was #27
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 14.845/73.77, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.611/256.70, Was #3

Will Hanna is helping Harker with the tune up, but they went too far over center this run and smoked the tires at the hit. Ray finally gets his baseline run and definitely has a chance to improve tomorrow.

Left Lane: Daniel Wilkerson Runs 5.644/256.99, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.754/254.04, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.992/239.14, Now #22; Best prior run: 5.976/239.53, Was #22

The Levi, Ray, and Shoup Nitro FC look-alike comes to the line. Dan Wilkerson finds the tune up and storm into the current top half of the field. Burnett repeats his times from yesterday and won't improve.

Left Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 5.669/246.08, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.255/184.50, Was #25
Right Lane: Nancy Matter Runs 5.894/246.08, Now #22; Best prior run: 5.944/246.75, Was #21

That will move the bump! Bohl gets his first clean pass and runs close to the top half of the field. Matter has a clean pass, but moves one spot down the ladder.

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.675/255.34, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.230/247.34, Was #25
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 11.245/87.11, Now #22; Best prior run: 5.886/247.79, Was #21

David Ray is on the bump spot at 5.718. Foster chatters the tires at the hit and lifts. Moats joins the "Full Rull" club and will be in the field for today.

Left Lane: John Bojec Runs 6.183/171.75, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.722/251.39, Was #19
Right Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.645/256.36, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.642/255.43, Was #7

Mick Snyder is now on the bump spot at 5.713. Bojec has good numbers down low and then dumps the laundry well before the lights. Ferro gets a little more MPH than earlier, but will stay #7 for now.

Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.711/253.14, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.719/248.07, Was #18
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.676/254.90, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.703/252.71, Was #15

Veney takes the long way down with the car moving out of the grove before mid-track and a gentle pull back into the center of the lane may have cost some ET. He bumps back in, but may not stay there. VonSmith makes a clean pass and moves up three spots.

Left Lane: Paul Gill Runs 5.641/253.37, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.682/254.57, Was #14
Right Lane: Chuck Cheeseman Runs 9.006/96.60, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.678/255.34, Was #13

Cheeseman left well and then had his hands full as the car made a hard move towards the wall. He has no choices and lifts. Gill doesn't notice and picks up the pace nicely into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Marty Nothstein Runs 5.627/257.28, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.649/256.75, Was #10

Nice pass on his single! Only a two hundredth improvement, but six spots on the ladder.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.547/261.47, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.638/259.11, Was #6
Right Lane: Ken Kraus Runs 5.642/246.93, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.609/252.61, Was #2

Tasca has only had one pass, but is still in the top half of the field. Looks like there was a lot left in the bag of tricks, as his clean and straight pass pushes Manzo down to #2! Kraus has a nice pass until near the lights and there is smoke out from underneath the body of the Camaro. No stuff on the track though.

12:28 p.m. Todd Veney ends up on the bump spot at 5.711.
