Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Darryl Jackman

SONOMA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, event at Infineon Raceway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Larry Miner Runs 5.773/252.90, Now #2
Right Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.713/247.52, Now #1

4:10 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 91 degrees, relative humidity 33 percent, barometer 29.88 inches.

The Funny Car session begins the same way the dragster session ended. We open with Miner and Williamson in the seventies.

Left Lane: Jeff Carroll Runs 7.177/133.45, Now #3
Right Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 8.193/110.14, Now #4

A pair of broken runs follow the opening shot. Carroll was left, right and sideways before shutting off and saving his new paint job. O'Bannon shook the tires and had to lift.

Left Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 5.826/253.47, Now #4
Right Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 5.625/256.55, Now #1

O'Bannon's teammate is up in the left lane and she manages to fire a nice shot. No shake, but I believe there was a lift early in the run. Rupert with no muss or fuss goes into the qualifying lead.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 7.733/116.05, Now #6
Right Lane: Pete Swayne Runs 8.151/111.13, Now #7

Gasparrelli would likely be the first to say they have been fighting with this car all season. So far a tough year. This won't help. A big bang from Gasparrelli's car and the burst panel flies high. Swayne didn't fare much better as he appeared to snuff a blower belt at about the same time.

Left Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.609/255.53, Now #1
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 6.154/182.62, Now #6

Hudson did this last week as well. He had a very short burnout and then goes up and simply runs a low sixty...just like last weekend! Woz used all his lane and JUST missed using Hudson's as well. He did not cross, but he was forced to lift.

Left Lane: Ken Kraus Runs 5.630/255.77, Now #3
Right Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.643/256.89, Now #4

August was just a taste loose but I'll assume he'll be ok with his run. Kraus is likely even a bit happier as he goes in a spot above August. At the moment the Woz is on the bubble with his 6.15.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 14.886/64.82, Now #14
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 7.170/135.85, Now #9

Gordon shook hard and got really loose. Thompson got loose about half track and came within inches of crossing.

Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.691/253.85, Now #5
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 11.969/73.38, Now #15

Smith headed straight for the concrete in the right lane and there was no choice but to lift. Taylor's run puts him in the #5 spot with several cars left to run. That bumps Woznichak and puts De Joria on the bump.

Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.668/256.02, Now #6
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.610/257.09, Now #2

Wow! That was a double bump as it put De Joria and Miner out of the field at the end of the session. This is the end of another nice session of alcohol.
