First Into the 6.30-Zone

In their first race of the season and after only two test sessions with their new car, driver George Landis set the National Muscle Car Association Pro Street speed record for the Next Generation Racing Team. After qualifying third at the season opening Ross Pistons NMCA Hot Rod & Muscle Car Nationals on April 13-15 in Bradenton, Florida, the '06 Dodge Stratus, tuned by crew chief Dave Oddy, ran a 6.394 at 228.94 mph in the first round of eliminations. Although they were unable to back up that elapsed time and speed, they still set the speed record at 222.27 mph, which was backed up by their 218 qualifying pass. They recorded the first 6.30-second e.t. in NMCA history.

Landis finished runner-up to Vinny Budano in the final round.

"We are now proving that with more experience we will be the ones to beat," said team owner Steve Quint. He gave special thanks to the crew, who "work like a Swiss clock" and had the engine down to bare bones three times, rebuilt the clutch twice, and changed clutch discs three times during the event.

The Dodge Stratus, which Quint bought from the legendary Jim Oddy after the end of the 2006 season, last year set the still-standing IHRA Pro Mod speed record at 238.93 mph. Now with headlights, a dash, mufflers and about 150 lbs. added for Pro Street trim, it is powered by a blown and injected 526 Hemi engine built by Bill Leverentz of Oddy's Automotive Inc. in Elma, NY. Scott Strasser and Frank Acquaro are crew members, Jon Quint is data consultant, and Phil Roberts consultant for the team. Sponsors for the car include Royal Purple and Autolite.

Next stop for the Florida-based team is the NDRA meet at Atco, NJ, on April 28-29.
