Top Alcohol Dragster Round 1 Eliminations
By Dan Bennett

DINWIDDIE, Va. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Inaugural Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals:

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
1482 Richard Bourke 8 Arthur Gallant
E1 ****WINNER**** 0.070 5.360 255.82 0.197 5.321 268.81
 Qualified: #8 5.331 261.12 #9 5.332 269.35
5:37 p.m. and we begin the first round of competition. This pair qualified right next to each other and neither showed much consistency, so it's anybody's race.

Both cars ran good runs.

It's a holeshot win to start things off. Gallant drifted over by the wall and pretty much stayed there for the entire run.

The track is clean and we're ready for the next two cars.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
185 Mike Kosky 110 Rich McPhillips
E1 ****WINNER**** 0.073 5.300 265.17 0.037 5.578 247.93
 Qualified: #7 5.302 267.53 #10 5.354 264.23
Kosky makes his burnout in the left lane, one of the few supercharged cars left in the class. Both of these guys have lots of passes down a racetrack.

That's another bump to Kosky's career best time and he will be back to run tomorrow.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
371 Dave Heitzman 33 Jeff Bohr
E1 0.070 13.379 65.17 ****WINNER**** 0.083 6.027 168.30
 Qualified: #6 5.278 264.39 #11 5.379 266.48
And we're lucky enough to get another pair of mixed fuels - one blown alcohol and one injected nitro burner.

Heitzman absolutely destroys the tires at his first move from the line. Bohr was on a very good run before he slowed just past half track. I wasn't able to see the reason why he let off.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
35 Ken Perry 318 Dave Hirata
E1 ****WINNER**** 0.079 5.258 265.33 0.068 5.323 264.03
 Qualified: #5 5.274 258.86 #12 5.475 238.22
The sun is now just above the pitside grandstand so the track will begin to cool pretty quickly.

What a drag race! The cars left pretty much together and looked like one machine as they went down the track. Hirata loses on his best run of the weekend.

Perry's pass was the quickest pass ever for a blown alcohol dragster. I think he's ready to race.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
5 Marty Thacker 1712 Dave DeAngelis
E1 ****WINNER**** 0.121 5.283 268.54 -0.014 5.379 258.71
 Qualified: #3 5.265 269.83 #14 5.520 255.97
It's over at the line as DeAngelis just misses the tree.

Thacker tries to take back the TAD honors but just misses.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
19 John Finke 1320 Wayne Morris
E1 ****WINNER**** 0.400 5.298 275.00 0.094 5.663 255.39
 Qualified: #1 5.183 277.26 #16 5.732 248.43
The top qualifier gets to pick his pair's position in the session, and Finke chooses to run more or less halfway through.

Morris has a steep hill to climb to get access to the second round.

And that was something completely different! Finke goes comatose on the line and Morris is out to a huge advantage. It looked like there was no way possible for him to catch up but he ran a strong pass and finally chased Morris down.

John Finke's MOV: 0.0595 seconds (approximately 22 feet), about a car length.

John Finke's incremental times: 60ft-0.929 sec., 330ft-2.431, 660ft-3.549/225.37mph, 1,000ft-4.489
Wayne Morris' incremental times: 60ft-0.929 sec., 330ft-2.515, 660ft-3.756/202.73mph, 1,000ft-4.786

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
42 Lee Callaway 25 Robin Samsel
E1 0.155 5.374 268.01 ****WINNER**** 0.100 5.409 252.76
 Qualified: #4 5.270 274.33 #13 5.487 236.26
And another holeshot win!

Callaway gets left on and has a bit of shake going to 330. At that point the header flames got perfectly steady and he took off in hot pursuit.

Robin Samsel's incremental margins: 60ft(0.011), 330 ft(0.054), 660ft(0.064), 1,000ft(0.055). MOV: 0.0202 seconds (approximately 8 feet).

Samsel loses lane choice to Perry in the next round.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
4 Bill Reichert 308 Dave Hedges Jr.
E1 ****WINNER**** 0.109 5.293 273.83 0.058 5.378 260.36
 Qualified: #2 5.209 276.63 #15 5.563 246.53
The last pair pulls to the line. Another holeshot?

Not this time, though Reichert got plenty of Hedges before the race was over. A larger lead would have been expected when you're #2 and racing the #15 car.

Reichert continues to the next round and his pursuit of the National Championship. He barely won lane choice (by .007) over Kosky next round. If he defeats Kosky, he will be our 2006 champion.
