Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

DINWIDDIE, Va. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Inaugural Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 14.761/66.58, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.039/264.80, Was #16

2:02 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 63 degrees, relative humidity 29 percent, barometer 29.89 inches, adjusted altitude 365 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

Another early tire-smoker for Pedregon, the rear tires up in smoke after going about 20 feet.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.995/233.80, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.867/302.21, Was #10
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.078/245.90, Now #17; Best prior run: 10.992/73.65, Was #19

Both cars nosed over around the 1,000-foot marker, Lee coming up four hundredths short of the bump time.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.837/306.33, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.937/260.31, Was #14
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.935/292.08, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.902/171.95, Was #18

Worsham moved into the top half with a tenth improvement, Pedregon improved by almost a second and bumped into the field, bumping Brother Frank from the field. Now Tony Bartone is on the bump spot at 4.985. However, he'll have to wait awhile to run, Cruz left a slick trail in the shutdown area - he had no free one coming, so this will cost him.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 4.919/295.08, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.985/250.27, Was #16
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.006/240.08, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.852/307.44, Was #10

Both drivers did a lot of driving around on the top part of their run, Bartone managing to move off the bump spot. Now Cruz Pedregon is on the bump spot at 4.935.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.983/286.98, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.346/111.02, Was #19
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.875/296.57, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.844/302.08, Was #9

Burkart's car appeared to be hurting engine parts for most of the run, the header flames very orange, and the Reading winner is down to one more chance to make the field and avoid "hero to zero" headlines. Another good run for Scelzi, like most he was a bit loose on the top end and his speed fell off a bit. The reason for all that - this track is still relatively green and there isn't much rubber on the top end of the lanes.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.831/304.53, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.923/296.70, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 5.357/193.46, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.838/302.01, Was #8

Ashley was very sideways in the middle of the run and had to lift. Pedregon made a very nice run to move into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 5.355/191.78, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.890/304.67, Was #14
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 7.798/105.09, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.784/307.09, Was #4

Head got about 300 feet, then hazed the tires. Kalitta got to about half track, did the same.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.883/299.60, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.885/303.30, Was #13
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.844/276.01, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.765/315.78, Was #3

Two good-looking runs, lots of tire haze on the top end of both runs.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.926/245.36, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.831/304.87, Was #6
Right Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 4.849/299.26, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.757/310.41, Was #2

beckman clicked it off early, Medlen did not. Up until he shut it off, Beckman was outrunning Medlen. Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.884 sec., 330ft-2.298, 660ft-3.267/262.64mph, 1,000ft-4.090
Eric Medlen's incremental times: 60ft-0.892 sec., 330ft-2.298, 660ft-3.286/256.89mph, 1,000ft-4.115

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.788/300.66, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.813/306.33, Was #5
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.866/281.36, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.751/311.05, Was #1

TJ made a very nice run, the best of the round, quickly pulling away from Hight early in the run, then holding that edge the rest of the way.

Tommy Johnson Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.851 sec., 330ft-2.253, 660ft-3.224/261.17mph, 1,000ft-4.052
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.290, 660ft-3.273/258.17mph, 1,000ft-4.106.
