Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

DINWIDDIE, Va. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Inaugural Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.610/257.04, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.697/254.90, Was #4
Right Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 5.949/230.65, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.418/170.69, Was #13

11:12 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 58 degrees, relative humidity 33 percent, barometer 29.97 inches, adjusted altitude -33 feet, track temperature 82 degrees.

Pomponio's car danced around a bit early in the run and trailed a plume of blue smoke on the top half, but he made it to the line under power for his best result of the weekend.

Left Lane: David Ray Runs 5.716/253.18, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.819/210.70, Was #6
Right Lane: John Headley Runs 6.140/192.71, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.564/142.37, Was #14

Nice run by Ray, his best effort so far - and Headley picked up four tenths of a second, still wasn't able to reach the finish line under power.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.567/258.62, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.732/253.61, Was #6
Right Lane: Bruce Mullins Runs 5.796/246.80, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.918/229.51, Was #9

Two nice runs, both stepping up a couple tenths today.

Left Lane: DJ Cox Jr. Runs 5.701/251.02, Now #6; Best prior run: 12.291/86.50, Was #15
Right Lane: Frank Schuster Runs 5.832/254.09, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.897/250.00, Was #9

Cox made a very nice run after two off-pace efforts yesterday. Schuster improved, stayed ninth when Cox leapfrogged him in the order.

Left Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 6.019/245.00, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.671/254.57, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.839/233.24, Was #10

Martin pulled into the pits early this morning, made a safe pass to get into the sixteen-car field. Snyder made a very nice run to move into the top half of the field.

Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.471/262.44, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.469/262.44, Was #1

Manzo closes the session with the second-quickest run ever, matching his speed from yesterday. Frank Manzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.941 sec., 330ft-2.432, 660ft-3.607/209.82mph, 1,000ft-4.616. Looking at his 60-foot time, he may have been deeply-staged - but that's getting very picky on an otherwise flawless run.
