Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

DINWIDDIE, Va. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Inaugural Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: DJ Cox Jr. No Time, Now #13; Best prior run: 12.291/86.50, Was #13
Right Lane: John Headley Runs 6.564/142.37, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.461/135.59, Was #12

5:27 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 63 degrees, relative humidity 34 percent, barometer 29.88 inches, adjusted altitude 395 feet, track temperature 82 degrees.

Cox spun the tires and coasted to a stop about 1,000 feet down the track. Headley picked up almost a second over his first run, but slowed on the top end of his run.

Left Lane: Jeff Burnett No Time, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.681/244.56, Was #3
Right Lane: Frank Schuster Runs 10.397/67.89, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.897/250.00, Was #6

Burnett's car fishtailed and crossed the centerline before half track, then took out the timing reflectors when he crossed back. Schuster saw him coming and lifted.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III No Time, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.732/253.61, Was #5
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.517/260.11, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.469/262.44, Was #1

Tasca lost fire on the burnout and pulled over next to the wall to clear the track for Manzo. Manzo "slowed" to a nice 5.517, tying the second-quickest run ever, also by Manzo at Maple Grove two weeks ago. That's good enough to back up his 5.469 as a national record.

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.737/251.06, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.697/254.90, Was #4
Right Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 6.418/170.69, Now #10; No Prior Run

Pomponio dropped a couple cylinders on the left side and started moving toward the centerline, forcing him to lift on his first pass of the weekend. Ferro made a clean run, but could not match his earlier run.

Left Lane: David Ray Runs 5.819/210.70, Now #6; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.839/233.24, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.621/155.44, Was #13

Ray was DQ'ed on his first run for crossing the centerline. He had the chutes out early on this run, the engine eating pistons on the top end. Snyder had trouble getting the car launched, but once it got off the line the car ran right down the groove.

Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.612/257.68, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.658/254.90, Was #2
Right Lane: Chris Brown Runs 6.015/240.42, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.557/211.16, Was #13

Newberry stepped up nicely - but is only second-best today. Brown had problems getting off the starting line, finally got it hooked up.
