Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

DINWIDDIE, Va. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Inaugural Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Chris Brown Runs 6.557/211.16, Now #2
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.732/253.61, Now #1

12:55 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 29.94 inches, adjusted altitude 738 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Tasca made a nice opening run, clean and relatively straight. Brown's car chattered the tires and rapidly lost ground to Tasca.

Left Lane: Bruce Mullins Runs 5.918/229.51, Now #2
Right Lane: Bobby Martindale Runs 6.310/214.21, Now #3

Mullins made a strong burnout, but his car trailed "death smoke" from half-track on during the run. Martindale's car was slow off the mark and never did come up to "full song." Then the Safety Safari went to work cleaning up the left lane.

Left Lane: Greg Beckner Runs 6.418/211.33, Now #4
Right Lane: DJ Cox Jr. Runs 12.291/86.50, Now #6

1:23 p.m. Let's try again. Beckner lost btraction and shook hard on the launch. Ray was on a good-looking run in the "Follow a Dream" entry past the 330-foot mark, then something went wrong and he shut it off before half track.

Left Lane: John Headley Runs 7.461/135.59, Now #6
Right Lane: David Ray Runs 8.157/98.77, Now #7

Headley lost traction and shook hard immediately. Ray was on a good run past the 330-foot marker, then something went sour and he shut it off.

Left Lane: Frank Schuster Runs 5.897/250.00, Now #3
Right Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.697/254.90, Now #1

Nice pass by Ferro, straight and smooth, to take over the top spot. Schuster lost a tenth to Ferro in the first 330 feet and another tenth the rest of the way, but didn't have any obvious problems.

Left Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 6.621/155.44, Now #9
Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.658/254.90, Now #1

Snyder's car was all over the left lane and he lifted around half track to stay on his own side of the centerline. Meanwhile, Newberry shot down the right lane, right to the top spot.

Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.469/262.44, Now #1
Right Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.681/244.56, Now #3

Rewrite your "best ever" list, Manzo just ripped them up with an awesome run - he had Newberry by 0.14 seconds and 11 mph at half track. That's the quickest and second-fastest run ever! Frank Manzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.943 sec., 330ft-2.434, 660ft-3.607/211.03mph, 1,000ft-4.614.
