Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

EDMONTON, Alb. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Knoll Gas - Torco Pro Stock at the 2006 eMax Drag Racing Series, CARS RV & Marine & Motorsports Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by TORCO Racing Fuels listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.656/210.28, Now #2
Right Lane: Dan Sweeney Runs 6.567/212.43, Now #1

4:22 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 41 percent, barometer 28.09 inches, adjusted altitude 3,215 feet, track temperature 103 degrees.

The track records at this altitude track are relatively modest - Robert Patrick's 6.488 and Frank Gugliotta's 214.08.

Neither car in the first pair threatened those records, but both made clean first runs and will have better conditions to work with in the evening "Night of Fire" session.

Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.548/213.20, Now #1
Right Lane: Elijah Morton No Time, Now #4

Morton never showed up in front of the tower. Haas upped the ante on a reasonable smooth run after some early hesitation.

Left Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.596/212.36, Now #3
Right Lane: Cary Goforth Runs 11.089/79.50, Now #5

Goforth's car lurched and shook, so he lifted before going 200 feet. Jones made a clean run, with a 0.994 60-foot time, the first to dip under a second this round.

Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.619/211.69, Now #5
Right Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 6.596/211.03, Now #4

Both cars had their tongues hanging out by the time they got to 1,000 feet.

Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.524/213.03, Now #1
Right Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.563/212.59, Now #3

Spiess made a nice run, with a nice 0.989 short time, but even he came up well over one mph short of the speed mark.

Left Lane: Rob Mansfield Runs 7.036/210.77, Now #10
Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.518/213.98, Now #1

mansfiled's car shook and started to turn right, he lifted compeletely off the throttle, then got back on it again. Meanwhile, Nobile made a nice, smooth run, easily turning in low ET and top speed of the round, just 0.5 mph slower than the track record.

Left Lane: Pete Berner Runs 6.527/213.57, Now #4
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.517/213.27, Now #1

Two nice runs, Patrick taking the top spot away from Nobile. Berner's 0.990 was only the third sub-one-second 60-foot time of the round so far - Patrick made do with a one-flat.

Left Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.490/214.89, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 6.519/213.54, Now #4

Gugliotta's car had a severe case of "loose" in the first half of this run, but the still came very close to the track ET record and reset the speed mark. Gillig did his best to stay with him on a good-looking run, ended up fourth. Gillig posted a 0.999 short time. Frank Gugliotta's incremental times: 60ft-0.983 sec., 330ft-2.747, 660ft-4.200/170.23mph, 1,000ft-5.442.
