12:48 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 57 percent, barometer 29.53 inches, adjusted altitude 1,579 feet, track temperature 105 degrees.

Noakes tried an old trick, blipping the throttle after they staged, possibly distracting Munroe enough for Noakes to get a big starting line advantage. However, Munroe still had the muscle to take the early lead and pull away for the win, so another #1-qualifier advances.

McMillen had the early lead, Thomas losing some additional ground with early tire shake, but he recovered and ran McMillen down by half track, then edged ahead for the win. Atchison launched into severe shake, the car lurching and bouncing violently. Big upset win by Tigges and his run was good enough to earn lane choice against Munroe in the semifinals.

Lebsack's car shook and danced on the launch and that let Dobbins get away for the win. However, he was not quick enough to get lane choice against Thomas in the semifinals.
