Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 41st annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.840/310.48, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 11.137/81.50, Now #21; No Prior Run

3:08 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 61 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.38 inches, adjusted altitude 930 feet, track temperature 86 degrees.

Burkart took out the ET cone yesterday and his time was DQ'ed. His problems continue here, going up in smoke about 200 feet out. Haddock goes right down the groove and makes a career best pass to get in the field in the 13th spot.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.874/315.12, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Grant Downing Runs 5.078/246.66, Now #16; Best prior run: 9.465/84.27, Was #19

Downing rattles the tires, pedals a couple of times then goes on through to get in the show on the bump spot for now. Wilkerson didn't make a run yesterday. He goes right down the groove on this pass and gets in the field.

Left Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 4.847/309.77, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.456/193.96, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.392/191.67, Was #18

Gilbertson gets about 600 feet out and the engine went silent, not sure why. Wyatt makes a career best run and gets in the show in the 14th spot.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 6.364/138.02, Now #21; Best prior run: 11.214/73.34, Was #24
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 9.702/101.79, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.381/220.62, Was #18

Creasy gets about 100 feet out and strikes the tires. Bartone gets out of the groove about 300 feet out, strikes the tires, then clicks it off.

Left Lane: John Force No Time, Now #23; Best prior run: 9.959/67.68, Was #23
Right Lane: Dale Pulde No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.009/302.08, Was #16

Force and Pulde complete their burnouts and start to stage. the tree malfunctions and they are both told to shut down. They will return later to make a qualifying run.

Left Lane: David Benjamin Runs 5.322/280.89, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.228/126.25, Was #22
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.743/175.18, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.822/323.89, Was #12

Head was moving around all the way through the run, then hazed the tires around half-track.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.845/259.21, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.590/175.75, Was #21

Bode moved around a lot at the beginning of the run, but hung on to make a pretty decent pass. He gets in the field for now in the 14th spot.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.735/317.87, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.821/318.24, Was #11
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 10.687/76.73, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.800/323.27, Was #9

Bazemore gets about 200 feet out and strikes the tires. Densham makes a great pass, his quickest of the year, and he takes the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.750/302.35, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.782/328.54, Was #8
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 9.657/85.55, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.795/321.81, Was #9

Johnson gets about 200 feet out and goes up in smoke. Worsham goes right down the groove and moves up a few notches to the third spot.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.696/329.18, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.778/320.66, Was #8
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 11.138/79.81, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.768/326.63, Was #5

Capps rattles the tires off the line, then clicks it off. Scelzi makes a great pass, a career best for him, and he takes the pole for now.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.710/329.99, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.778/322.58, Was #8
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.714/328.94, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.760/324.12, Was #5

A couple of pretty good runs for the Pedregon brothers. Tony went right down the groove, Cruz drifted toward the wall.

Left Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 4.715/328.06, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.773/324.51, Was #8
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.746/162.84, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.745/323.66, Was #5

Hight was on a decent pass, but blew the engine about 500 feet out, the burst panel flying high into the air. Medlen goes right down the groove and moves up to the fourth spot.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.761/325.53, Now #8; Best prior run: 9.959/67.68, Was #23
Right Lane: Dale Pulde Runs 5.010/292.33, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.009/302.08, Was #17

4:06 p.m. It's been about 32 minutes since Force first attempted this run and the cleanup extended that to about 36 minutes. He makes a decent run here and gets in the eighth spot. If things stay as they are, he would have a first round match-up against Capps, and a potential second round match-up with Scelzi, the two drivers ahead of him in the points chase.
