Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 41st annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.731/205.82, Now #8; Best prior run: 12.665/68.52, Was #25
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.767/204.51, Now #19; No Prior Run

2:24 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 61 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.38 inches, adjusted altitude 930 feet, track temperature 86 degrees.

Mike Thomas is on the bump spot at 6.765. Conditions are almost perfect, so the field should be thoroughly shuffled by the time the round is over. A thin layer of clouds has kept the track cool almost all day and starting line traction was the biggest problem yesterday.

Both had 1.00 60-foot times, both went right down the track. Krisher bumped in, Grant came up short. Now Allen Johnson is on the bump spot at 6.763.

Left Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.850/201.94, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.880/201.04, Was #25
Right Lane: Max Naylor Runs 10.350/88.27, Now #26; Best prior run: 6.899/194.88, Was #26

Naylor launched, shook, and shut down. Rivera made a full pass.

Left Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.850/201.94, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.858/201.76, Was #25
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.724/206.13, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.777/204.63, Was #21

Martino got Morgan's new Stratus into the field nicely - for now, anyway. Now Dave Howard is on the bump spot at 6.763.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.705/205.79, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.838/199.91, Was #23
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.749/204.51, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.772/203.61, Was #21

So far, the only driver under 1.00 seconds for 60 feet was Naylor. Smith was the second, with a 0.998 short time. Both drivers bumped into the field, putting Greg Stanfield on the bump spot at 6.750.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.717/205.63, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.791/204.82, Was #23
Right Lane: Bob Panella Runs 6.721/205.57, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.766/204.29, Was #21

Martino just put Morgan's other car into the field. Morgan's car took the long way to the 330-foot marker, making a big "S-turn." Panella also got into the field.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.708/205.41, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.765/204.88, Was #22
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.727/205.85, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.750/204.48, Was #18

Thomas started the round on the bump spot in Kenny Koretsky's Nitrofish Wear Stratus. He got it back in very nicely here. Stanfield also bumped back in, but that time may not hold up for long.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.716/204.42, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.763/204.48, Was #22
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 11.066/69.36, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.750/205.01, Was #19

Edwards slowed early in the run with tire shake. AJ did a nice job to get back into the field.

Left Lane: Dave Howard Runs 6.725/205.16, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.763/205.32, Was #22
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.733/206.26, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.741/205.38, Was #18

Both made good runs, but Howard's run lowered the bump time and Gaines came up short after some early tire shake.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.712/205.47, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.760/204.91, Was #22
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.717/207.15, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.741/206.35, Was #19

Two more into the field - Richie Stevens is now on the bump spot at 6.729. WJ's speed is tops for the weekend so far.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.715/205.51, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.739/205.44, Was #20
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 12.418/71.47, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.730/205.10, Was #17

Yates' car made a hard right turn, toward the wall, and he had to lift. Connolly made a nice run after a 1.00 60-foot time. Greg Stanfield is on the bump spot at 6.727.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.707/205.60, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.729/205.57, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.704/205.79, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.719/205.41, Was #12

The Schumacher teammates squared off here...both moved right into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.685/206.54, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.714/206.83, Was #9
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.683/207.62, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.699/206.64, Was #2

Anderson was all the way down in the bottom half of the field by the time he staged the car, made a small wiggle about 60 feet out, and KJ beat him to the finish line by 0.002 seconds! Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.800, 660ft-4.303/163.95mph, 1,000ft-5.596
Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.002 sec., 330ft-2.808, 660ft-4.308/164.59mph, 1,000ft-5.598. KJ also posted top speed of the event on this run.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.677/206.83, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.704/206.67, Was #4
Right Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.683/206.70, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.696/206.29, Was #3

This was fun to watch until after the finish line, then Line's car went long when the chutes malfunctioned - well into the sand box. The nose of the carbon fibre GTO body is badly damaged, the sand caving it in as the car came to a stop. Jason Line's incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-2.793, 660ft-4.294/164.29mph, 1,000ft-5.588.
Erica Enders' incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-2.800, 660ft-4.303/164.21mph, 1,000ft-5.595.
