Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #1

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 41st annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Randy Eakins No Time, Now #2
Right Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.433/261.83, Now #1

12:00 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 67 degrees, relative humidity 46 percent, barometer 29.43 inches, adjusted altitude 1,329 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Eakins completes his burnout, starts to stage, then shuts down, not sure why. O'Bannon shook the tires a little off the line, but drove through it and made a great pass.


Left Lane: Dennis Swearingen Runs 5.887/223.10, Now #3
Right Lane: Timothy Bowgren Runs 5.582/251.77, Now #2

Swearingen had a couple of cylinders at the hit, then shook the tires for about 300 feet. Bowgren made a trouble free pass.

Left Lane: Artie Allen Runs 20.386/61.71, Now #5
Right Lane: Brandon Johnson Runs 5.519/255.29, Now #2

Allen hits the throttle and the engine bogs. He finally gets it going and rolls through the lights. Johnson had a little tire shake but drove through it for a decent pass.

Left Lane: Joe Windham Runs 5.344/266.95, Now #1
Right Lane: Kevin Brown Runs 5.697/231.75, Now #5

Brown was on a decent pass, then put out a couple of cylinders and slowed. Windham goes right down the groove and takes the pole for now.

Left Lane: Robert Perkins Runs 5.516/256.21, Now #3
Right Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.713/232.07, Now #7

Perkins shakes the tires off the line, gets out of the groove, then drifts toward the center-line. Hitchman had a couple of cylinders out all the way through the run.

Left Lane: John Haley Runs 6.541/149.90, Now #10
Right Lane: Ben Harper Runs 5.742/253.09, Now #8

Haley gets about 800 feet out, then the engine popped and shut down. Harper made a trouble free pass.

Left Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.420/261.32, Now #3
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.289/271.13, Now #1

A couple of great runs here, both right down the groove and hitting on all cylinders. Reichert takes the pole for now, Federlin gets in the third spot.

Left Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 14.276/83.43, Now #14
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.502/254.38, Now #5

Miersch hits the throttle and goes up in smoke. Shields shook the tires a little but drove through it for a decent pass.

Left Lane: Hillary Will Runs 5.576/256.21, Now #9
Right Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.518/252.80, Now #7



Left Lane: Mike Austin Runs 9.846/80.12, Now #17
Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.354/259.76, Now #3

Austin gets out of shape right off the line makes a hard move toward the center-line, but somehow avoids hitting the 330-foot cone. Force makes a great pass right out of the box and gets in the third spot for now.

Left Lane: Carl Magee Runs 5.678/242.45, Now #13
Right Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 5.273/268.22, Now #1

Torrence moves around a little early in the run, but keeps it in the groove and takes over the top spot. Magee makes a decent pass and gets in the show.

Left Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 5.371/267.37, Now #5

Olivarez makes a good-looking pass to finish this first session of qualifying and gets in the show in the fifth spot. The session ends with Torrence on the pole and Hitchman on the bump with a 5.713.
