By Larry Sullivan

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fifth annual ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.244/226.66, Now #4; Best prior run: 27.878/668.31, Was #24
Right Lane: Brandon Pesz Runs 6.373/223.02, Now #13; No Prior Run

3:15 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 32 percent, barometer 28.40 inches, adjusted altitude 3,220 feet, track temperature 93 degrees.

Coughlin was in the Clash, but spun the tires and slow-rolled through the quarter mile on his first attempt. This one was much better, a solid, clean run to give him something to tune from. Pesz stepped up nicely from his first run, bumping Mike Moran from the field. Now Zach Barklage is on the bump spot at 6.447.

Left Lane: Dennis Radford Runs 6.307/222.47, Now #12; Best prior run: 10.354/119.14, Was #23
Right Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.301/226.58, Now #11; Best prior run: 13.163/74.77, Was #25

Radford and Kuhns both had busted runs in the first round and bumped in nicely here. That bumped Moran and Pat Stoken, putting Joey Martin on the bump spot at 6.387.

Left Lane: Doug Palmer Runs 6.386/220.37, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.838/158.58, Was #23
Right Lane: Harold Laird Runs 6.438/218.16, Now #19; Best prior run: 10.494/84.23, Was #25

Palmer replaced Martin on the bubble. Laird went a little long, edging into the sand pit at the top of the hill, sliding in his own oil, so we'll be down for a few minutes.

Left Lane: Kip Dupuis Runs 7.327/147.15, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.526/219.90, Was #22
Right Lane: Steve Engel Runs 6.186/231.20, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.333/161.48, Was #25

Dupuis' Buick spun the tires hard and the car fishtailed several times on the launch. Engel had no problems at all, making a nice, strong, smooth pass, bumping Palmer. That put Brandon Pesz on the bump at 6.373.

Left Lane: Mike Moran Runs 6.392/199.14, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.503/234.25, Was #22
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.364/228.34, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.803/196.79, Was #25

Moran's car took the long route to the finish line, first left of the groove, then right. Patterson squeaked into the field, replacing Pesz on the bump spot.

Left Lane: Joey Martin Runs 6.406/221.49, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.387/222.36, Was #19
Right Lane: Scott Bailey Runs 6.579/212.26, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.765/211.39, Was #25

No help here, two clean runs.

Left Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.329/222.40, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.334/222.07, Was #15
Right Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 6.480/215.72, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.447/221.38, Was #23

barklage's car struggled to get down the track. Lang improved slightly, stayed 15th.

Left Lane: John Scialpi Runs 6.394/219.36, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.324/221.89, Was #14
Right Lane: Pat Stoken Runs 6.492/214.01, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.422/221.05, Was #21

Nope, no improvement for either driver.

Left Lane: Mike Bell Runs 6.283/227.04, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.260/226.24, Was #8
Right Lane: Lee Smith Runs 6.301/224.62, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.277/223.06, Was #10

Nice run by Kerunsky to move up to the top half.

Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.243/228.77, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.212/229.31, Was #4

King is the final car before the Clash semifinals. He lost on a holeshot in the first round of the Clash. He made another good run here, failed to improve.

Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.264/228.23, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.257/230.72, Was #8
Right Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 6.499/168.98, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.096/231.44, Was #1

hernandez made a strong run to 1,000 feet, then slowed abruptly, the reason not evident from here. Critchley was a few ticks slower than his first run.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 6.232/227.38, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.280/226.58, Was #11
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.170/231.12, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.195/231.12, Was #3
