Pro Modified Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fifth annual ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Kip Dupuis Runs 6.526/219.90, Now #1

11:05 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 28.46 inches, adjusted altitude 2,660 feet, track temperature 86 degrees.

This was Dupuis' first run in AMS Pro Mod action - his '57 Buick appears to have started life as a '57 Chevy, with portholes and Buick trim added. He made an uneventful pass to open the round. By the way, the last four pairs of this round will be the cars competing in the FLOWMASTER Pro Mod CLASH.

Left Lane: Scott Bailey Runs 6.765/211.39, Now #3
Right Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.334/222.07, Now #1

Two more AMS "newcomers." Bailey's car chattered the tires and got a bit sideways on the launch. Clean pass by Lang to take the "provisional pole."

Left Lane: Lee Smith Runs 6.277/223.06, Now #1
Right Lane: Dennis Radford Runs 10.354/119.14, Now #5

Radford shook and slowed immediately. Nice run by Smith to take over the top spot - for now.

Left Lane: Pat Stoken Runs 6.422/221.05, Now #4
Right Lane: John Scialpi Runs 6.324/221.89, Now #2

Stoken is also a "newcomer" in AMS competition. His car fishtailed several times early in the run.

Left Lane: Harold Laird Runs 10.494/84.23, Now #9
Right Lane: Mike Moran Runs 6.503/234.25, Now #5

Laird had the wheels up and the rear tires shaking. He mpedaled, the shaking started again, and he threw in the towel. Moran's turbcharged car was slow off the line, but turned in a bug speed.

Left Lane: Brandon Pesz No Time, Now #12
Right Lane: Joey Martin Runs 6.387/222.36, Now #4

Corvttes, a pair, '53 and '63. Pesz left before the tee was activated, then shook and shuddered. Clean run by Martin.

Left Lane: Steve Engel Runs 7.333/161.48, Now #10
Right Lane: Mike Bell Runs 6.260/226.24, Now #1

Bell, in the Roy Hill Mustang, sports a "Blue Max" logo on the door. Engel shook and slowed. Bell went right down the lane and to the top for now.

Left Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 13.163/74.77, Now #14
Right Lane: Doug Palmer Runs 6.838/158.58, Now #10

Kuhns had the front wheels a couple feet in the air and the Viper turned hard left. He managed to avoid the wall, but not by much. Palmer's run looked good early, but he slowed on the top end after running 171 mph at half track.

Left Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 6.447/221.38, Now #8
Right Lane: Frankie Taylor Runs 6.247/224.25, Now #1

Both cars were loose, Barklage out of the groove and near the centerline. Nice run by Taylkor, taking ove as the one to beat for the top spot.

Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.212/229.31, Now #1
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.257/230.72, Now #3

This si the first of the FLOWMASTER Pro Mod Clash pairings. Two nice runs, King going to the #1 spot for now.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.195/231.12, Now #1
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.803/196.79, Now #15

Patterson shook on the launch, but Payne blasted down the track and into the top spot.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 27.878/668.31, Now #22
Right Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 6.096/231.44, Now #1

Coughlin spun the tires hard and coasted to a stop just past the finish line. Hernandez made an awesome run, especially considering that this is their first lap on the track this weekend.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 6.280/226.58, Now #9
Right Lane: Glen Kerunsky Runs 6.277/227.23, Now #7

Two clean runs to close the first round of qualifying.
