Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3

JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fifth annual Ameriquest Mortgage NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Vinny Arcadi Runs 6.075/151.80, Now #23; No Prior Run

1:35 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 29.12 inches, adjusted altitude 1,763 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Arcadi gets about 300 feet out, pulls the wheels about feet off the ground, then has to back off the throttle.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 7.609/108.78, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.737/325.69, Was #7
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.389/209.23, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.922/269.29, Was #17

Hight gets about 300 feet out and smokes the tires. Lee has problems late in the run and has to shut down early.

Left Lane: Jack Wyatt No Time, Now #25; Best prior run: 10.564/84.28, Was #25
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.759/327.74, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.759/326.87, Was #10

Wyatt left before the tree was activated and receives no time. Capps goes right down the groove, running a career best speed and equaling his season quickest pass.

Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.245/213.13, Now #21; Best prior run: 9.322/104.32, Was #24
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.467/187.39, Now #22; Best prior run: 5.304/203.28, Was #21

Gilbertson gets about 700 feet out and pops the burst panel. Bode was moving around all over the track, swapping cylinders, then almost hits the wall about 800 feet out and shuts down.

Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 12.704/81.68, Now #21; Best prior run: 5.142/219.40, Was #20
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.982/268.12, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.313/217.70, Was #23

Creasy strikes the tires about 100 feet out and clicks it off.

Left Lane: John Lawson Runs 13.187/87.53, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.942/269.29, Was #18
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.232/218.30, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.974/302.01, Was #19

Lawson goes up in smoke at the hit. Haddock gets about 1000 feet out and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 4.939/292.71, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.787/324.98, Was #14
Right Lane: Gary Densham No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.842/319.98, Was #16

Densham gets about 400 feet out and the car makes a hard move to the right. He crosses the centerline, just missing the rear of Ashley's car, then hits the wall. He comes to a stop past the finish-line and exits the car, seemingly unhurt.

Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 4.789/318.84, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.779/318.77, Was #13
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 4.830/317.64, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.800/325.77, Was #15

A couple of decent runs but neither improve.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.773/313.29, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.773/319.60, Was #12
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.843/320.05, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.768/323.97, Was #11

Burkart equals his run from last night and stays in the 12th spot. No help for Wilkerson.

Left Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 6.997/121.97, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.742/320.89, Was #9
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.807/325.61, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.730/329.34, Was #6

Medlen gets about 400 feet out and goes up in smoke. Bazemore goes right down the groove.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.749/329.42, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.738/328.54, Was #8
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.784/323.50, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.711/321.65, Was #5

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 5.537/179.52, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.698/331.45, Was #4
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 7.168/113.87, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.697/331.28, Was #3

Scelzi gets about 500 feet out and goes up in smoke. Johnson gets a little further, breaks the tires loose, then clicks it off.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 8.276/102.35, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.680/330.80, Was #1
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.777/303.09, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.680/320.36, Was #2

Cruz Pedregon gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Tony goes right down the groove and makes another good run.
