Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fifth annual Ameriquest Mortgage NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 5.788/253.09, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.748/254.47, Was #15
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.691/253.52, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.769/252.43, Was #16

Weather conditions: air temperature 53 degrees, relative humidity 66 percent, barometer 29.85 inches, adjusted altitude -239 feet, track temperature 73 degrees.

Harker with the best pass of the season here for Harker to move off the bump. That will slide Lee down to the bubble and he will just have to wait and see if he can hold on.


Left Lane: Kirk Williams Runs 5.783/248.75, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.698/252.28, Was #12
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.670/250.00, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.695/243.99, Was #11

Taylor with a really nice pass to move up the ladder a couple spots. No help here for Williams, but still a good pass.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.672/252.99, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.613/253.47, Was #6
Right Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.640/246.84, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.599/256.02, Was #4

Two more really nice passes.

Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 17.989/49.07, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.583/258.86, Was #2
Right Lane: Larry Miner Runs 8.051/114.10, Now #24; Best prior run: 9.273/113.15, Was #24

Miner loses traction as soon as he hit the throttle and was side ways, he pedaled it and lost traction again before clicking it off. Newberry with problems right off the line and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.811/252.57, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.856/254.62, Was #19
Right Lane: Rick Cortino Runs 6.271/226.96, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.404/224.40, Was #23

Contino with his best pass of the weekend, but will not get into the show. Moats with his best pass and he too will come up short.

Left Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 6.436/221.82, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.735/248.39, Was #15
Right Lane: Bruce Carlson Runs 5.742/251.77, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.879/235.15, Was #20

Burnett with a lot of tire shake. Carlson drives through tire shake to get into the show.

Left Lane: Mike Bell No Time, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.672/255.34, Was #10

Bell launches with the front end in the air and when it came back down to earth the car got really lose. The rear end of the car slid and cross the centerline and collected the half track timing cones.

Left Lane: Mark Billington Runs 5.720/252.76, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.735/251.67, Was #13
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.563/259.26, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.592/259.66, Was #3

This is the first round of the AllStars but these rounds count as qualifying. Manzo with a great pass to go to the number one spot. Billington with his best pass of the weekend.

Left Lane: Danny Townsend Runs 5.666/254.52, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.662/253.99, Was #8
Right Lane: Cy Chesterman No Time, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.649/253.37, Was #7

Chesterman had problems on the burnout.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.661/255.29, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.599/252.80, Was #5
Right Lane: John Weaver Runs 5.624/254.52, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.722/250.13, Was #14



Left Lane: Tate Branch Runs 5.700/249.03, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.803/249.53, Was #18
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.537/260.71, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.569/259.91, Was #2

Payne with a great pass the seventh quickest in the history of the sport and he goes to the number one spot.
