Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1

JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fifth annual Ameriquest Mortgage Route 66 NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Tim Gibson Runs 5.103/198.93, Now #2
Right Lane: Tim Cullinan Runs 4.681/315.42, Now #1

5:12 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 24 percent, barometer 29.71 inches, adjusted altitude 1,137 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Gibson had problems late in the run and shut down. Cullinan made a career best run.


Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 4.969/256.60, Now #2
Right Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 7.074/112.55, Now #4

Novelli hazed the tires about 300 feet out and clicked it off. Hartley gets about 100 feet out and the engine goes up in a big ball of flame.

Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 5.272/186.61, Now #4
Right Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 10.868/80.34, Now #6

Zizzo gets about 100 feet out and goes up in smoke. Litton starts moving around about 400 feet out and shuts down.

Left Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr. Runs 4.778/309.84, Now #2
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 5.404/171.51, Now #6

Troxel starts smoking the tires, gets out of the groove, moves to the left, and almost crosses the centerline. Lagana makes a decent pass and gets in for now.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.611/318.99, Now #1
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 5.597/174.01, Now #8

Beckman gets about 300 feet out and pitches the blower belt. Millican goes right down the groove and takes the early pole.

Left Lane: John Smith Runs 4.629/312.78, Now #2
Right Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 11.041/71.42, Now #12

Fuller gets about 300 feet out and strikes the tires. Smith goes right down the groove, then started mixing up cylinders as he went through the lights.

Left Lane: Scott Weis Runs 7.656/112.16, Now #12
Right Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 4.565/316.75, Now #1

Weis goes up in smoke about 400 feet out. Kalitta shook the tires, drove through it , then went on to take the pole for now.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 11.713/75.96, Now #16
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 5.942/143.46, Now #11

McClenethan goes up in smoke right off the line. Herbert gets a little further, about 400 feet out, then strikes the tires and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 11.288/71.37, Now #17
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.854/219.22, Now #6

Bernstein goes up in smoke about 200 feet out and shuts down. Lucas was on a good run, 274 MPH at half track, then he strikes the tires and has to shut down.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 12.723/74.24, Now #20
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 6.953/118.95, Now #13

Grubnic goes up in smoke right off the line. Kalitta gets about 300 feet out, strikes the tires, then clicks it off.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.511/326.63, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.486/325.14, Now #1

Schumacher makes a great pass, but it could have been better. he gets out of the groove early, then loses a cylinder late in the run. Dixon went right down the groove and gets in the second spot.
