Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Fifth annual Ameriquest Mortgage Route 66 NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Vinny Arcadi No Time, Now #1

Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 24 percent, barometer 29.71 inches, adjusted altitude 1,137 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Arcadi was loose earl and got out of the groove, making a move toward the wall. When he reeled it back in he went shooting across the track taking out the half track cones and getting real close to the left lane wall before he was able to click it off.


Left Lane: John Lawson Runs 4.942/269.29, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.922/269.29, Now #1

Lee was on real good pass until around 1000 feet when the car nosed over. Lawson with a clean pass.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 4.872/312.71, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.304/203.28, Now #4

Ashley with a great looking pass even though it was moving around on the top end. It looked like Bode pushed out a head gasket just past half track with a quick flash of flames.

Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 5.142/219.40, Now #4
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 6.507/140.24, Now #6

Haddock lost power early, not sure what happened but a lot of fuel was coming out the headers. Creasy Jr. was on a good pass until it pitched the blower belt.

Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 12.838/59.55, Now #7

Head got up on the rear slicks as soon as he hit throttle and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 4.996/237.75, Now #5
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.842/319.98, Now #1

Pedregon was on a really good pass until around 900 feet when he banged the blower and sent the burst panel flying high into the air. Densham with a real nice pass, straight down the groove. Densham said in the post race interview that run should be good enough to get them in the show.

Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 9.322/104.32, Now #10
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 4.800/325.77, Now #1

Gilbertson with problems right off the starting line and clicked off. Bartone launched hard and kept it stuck right in the middle of the groove for a career best E.T. and speed.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.874/297.75, Now #4
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 6.235/148.54, Now #10

Wilkerson was dropping cylinders early and it was pushing to the centerline and he finally had to click it off. Burkart with a good baseline pass to start the weekend.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.804/313.58, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.110/221.89, Now #9

Cruz has been struggling the last couple races and lays down a good looking pass to start the weekend. Tony was dropping cylinders and got out of the groove just past half track before he finally clicked it off.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.909/250.04, Now #7
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.748/329.75, Now #1

Bazemore with a great looking pass, he runs the quickest pass of the season for Whit here. Whit Bazemore's incremental times: 60ft-0.893 sec., 330ft-2.292, 660ft-3.266/262.03mph, 1,000ft-4.067 Worsham clicked it off early.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.714/330.47, Now #1
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.759/326.87, Now #3

Johnson Jr with a picture perfect pass here, straight down the groove for a career best E.T. and mph pass. Tommy Johnson Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.279, 660ft-3.244/265.27mph, 1,000ft-4.037 Capps was just a tick behind, but still a good looking pass.

Left Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 4.776/324.83, Now #5
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.758/325.77, Now #3

Force was skating around on the top end, and then the engine started eating it self up on the top end. force still with a quick pass and Medlen was right there with him.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.737/325.69, Now #3
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.723/329.83, Now #2

This was a great looking drag race to end the session. Number one and two in points go to numbers two and three in the field. Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.295, 660ft-3.255/265.01mph, 1,000ft-4.052
Gary Scelzi's incremental times: 60ft-0.892 sec., 330ft-2.282, 660ft-3.247/264.23mph, 1,000ft-4.044
