Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 21st annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Duane Beers Runs 6.137/193.38, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.949/240.29, Was #13
Right Lane: DJ Cox Jr Runs 6.255/183.72, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.066/231.32, Was #16

1:56 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 51 percent, barometer 29.82 inches, adjusted altitude 1,541 feet, track temperature 105 degrees.

At the start of this session, Cox was on the bump spot at 6.066 seconds. Cox will stay on the bubble after this uneventful pass. Beers popped the blower at the end of the track.


Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.651/255.73, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.666/255.58, Was #1
Right Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 12.578/65.83, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.861/243.77, Was #8

Manzo had his quickest run of the three qualifying sessions. Martin shook the tires and shut it down early.

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.774/244.60, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.927/243.15, Was #12
Right Lane: David Ray Runs 5.725/252.99, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.718/252.52, Was #3

Ferro moved into the top half of the field with a nice run down the quarter mile. Ray had a good pass but was not s quick as he was yesterday.

Left Lane: Bruce Mullins Runs 5.844/241.50, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.922/241.80, Was #12
Right Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 5.889/242.67, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.002/238.81, Was #14

Both drivers had their best run of the three qualifying sessions and both moved up three spots in the order.

Left Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 5.682/252.71, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.490/159.70, Was #19
Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.644/254.95, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.686/253.04, Was #2

Gibson was not in the field and needed to beat the bump time of 6.066 seconds to make it in. Gibson got the run he needed and more as he had went right down the groove for his career best elapsed time to go from the number 19 spot to number three for now. Newberry took the top spot away from Manzo with his quickest run of the three qualifying sessions.

Left Lane: Ron Zavarella No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.025/235.80, Was #16
Right Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 5.932/240.38, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.890/240.64, Was #13

Zavarella shook hard as soon as he launched and shut it down. Stickler got about 100 feet from the start when he shook the rear tires on his car.

Left Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.722/246.66, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.795/239.78, Was #7
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.740/251.30, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.820/247.20, Was #9

Burnett and Tasca both had their career best ETs and Tasca had his career best speed as well. Both moved up in the order.

Right Lane: John Headley Runs 6.363/227.00, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.496/213.70, Was #20

Headley had his career best speed on this pass but was not quick enough to make the field.

Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.755/250.92, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.812/249.86, Was #9

Harker had a nice-looking run that let him move up two spots in the order.
