Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 21st annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.929/303.30, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.899/108.90, Was #16
Right Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 5.062/285.59, Now #12; No Prior Run

6:48 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.84 inches, adjusted altitude 1,884 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

At the start of the second qualifying session, Densham was on the bump spot at 7.899 seconds. Wyatt did not make a run in the first session.

This session, both drivers had good trips down the quarter mile. Densham moved off the bubble and up nine spots in the order. Wyatt got himself into the field, bumping Medlen in the process. Cruz Pedregon is on the bump spot at 5.343 seconds.


Left Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 4.827/314.24, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.530/205.01, Was #17
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 4.865/288.58, Now #4; Best prior run: 10.366/92.68, Was #18

Medlen was just bumped from the field by Wyatt. Neither he nor Gilbertson were in the field when this session began. Another nice pair of runs down the track that took Medlen from outside the field to the top of the order and put Gilbertson into the number four spot for now. Cruz Pedregon and Paul Lee both got bumped from the field. Whit Bazemore is on the bump spot at 5.152 seconds.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.927/312.13, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.343/249.86, Was #18
Right Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 4.800/298.60, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.009/236.92, Was #13

Two good runs. Cruz got back into the field and Frank took over the top spot in the order for now. Ron Capps is on the bump spot at 5.081 seconds.

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 12.088/63.74, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.217/213.27, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 4.864/318.39, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.973/268.22, Was #12

Lee launched and shook the tires. He tried to drive through it but the rear end of the car got loose and he had to back off the throttle. Ashley took his car down he groove to move up seven spots in the order.

Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.813/320.13, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.152/282.01, Was #17
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.836/317.94, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.911/310.98, Was #9

Bazemore went from the number 17 spot to number two with this pass. Hight moved up five spots to number four. There are still eight drivers left to make the second qualifying attempt, so these two may not be able to hang on to their spots in the order.

Left Lane: Ron Capps No Time, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.081/251.86, Was #17
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.804/322.11, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.910/310.13, Was #10

Both cars did their burnouts. When they were getting ready to stage, starter Rick Stewart told Capps to shut his car down. Force had a nice run to move into the number two spot. After Force finished his run, Capps and his crew got into a starting line argument with Stewart.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.943/315.93, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.000/296.57, Was #15
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.829/317.94, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.903/303.84, Was #10

Two good runs that let Worsham move up five spots and Head up one spot.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.887/313.58, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.974/299.73, Was #15
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.865/311.56, Now #10; No Prior Run

Burkart went from outside the field to the number 10 spot and Wilkerson moved up three spots.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 10.598/79.05, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.912/299.66, Was #13
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.801/318.84, Now #2; No Prior Run

Bartone got to the 330-foot marker when he shook the tires hard and his car shut down. Pedregon took his car right down the groove to move from outside the field to the number two spot for now.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.766/322.11, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.862/316.82, Was #9
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.794/324.59, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.861/311.85, Was #8

Scelzi and Johnson saved the best for last as they had the two quickest runs of the session to retake the top two spots in the order.
