Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 21st annual Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bruce Mullins Runs 5.942/239.95, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.922/241.80, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.812/249.86, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.820/247.66, Was #4

4:40 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 29.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,147 feet, track temperature 117 degrees.

At the start of this session, Jeff McCulloch was on the bubble with a bump time of 6.324 seconds.

Mullins got out of the groove at mid track. He got back in but then drifted back out again. Harker was quicker than his first session time but it had no effect on his spot in the order.


Left Lane: Sam Leland Runs 6.202/222.80, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.687/124.63, Was #19
Right Lane: John Headley Runs 6.496/213.70, Now #18; No Prior Run

Leland was too slow to make the field in his first attempt and Headley did not make a pass in the first session. Leland shook the tires when he launched but drove through it to make it into the field for now. Headley's car never got up to speed.

Left Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 6.490/159.70, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.500/160.65, Was #19
Right Lane: David Ray Runs 5.718/252.52, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.754/249.16, Was #2

Gibson shook the tires nearly all the way down the track. Ray was quicker than his first session run but it had no effect on his spot in the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Mark Billington Runs 5.767/248.11, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.283/119.40, Was #20
Right Lane: Jeff McCulloch Runs 6.336/207.21, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.324/197.05, Was #17

Billington got the run he needed to take himself from being out of the field to the number three spot in the order, for now. McCulloch got bumped earlier in this session and was not quick enough to make it back in. Sam Leland is on the bump spot at 6.202 seconds.

Left Lane: Duane Beers Runs 5.949/240.29, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.069/237.13, Was #15
Right Lane: Eric Lourie Runs 5.894/241.24, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.909/240.12, Was #8

Both drivers improved their spots in the order. Beers moved up five spots and Lourie moved up one.

Left Lane: Jeff Burnett Runs 5.795/239.78, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.971/238.38, Was #11
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.820/247.20, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.900/242.50, Was #8

Two good runs down the groove. Burnett moved up six spots in the order, Tasca one spot.

Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.677/254.18, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.666/255.58, Was #1
Right Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 6.111/238.01, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.002/238.81, Was #13

Pomponio shook the tires and drove through the shake. Manzo had a clean run but it looked as if he let the chute out a bit early. Neither driver improved his spot in the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.927/243.15, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.241/179.25, Was #17
Right Lane: DJ Cox Jr Runs 6.076/230.10, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.066/231.32, Was #15

Cox drifted right and out of the groove. Ferro had a nice pass down the middle of his lane and got himself into the field, bumping Leland in the process. Cox is on the bubble now with a bump time of 6.066 seconds.

Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.686/253.04, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.789/250.32, Was #4

Newberry moved up two spots in the order with a nice pass down the groove.

Right Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 5.890/240.64, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.979/235.15, Was #13

Stickler had a little bit of tire chatter at the start but he drove through and was able to move up four spots in the order.
