Pro Modified Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 51st annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.281/225.37, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.328/222.84, Now #14; No Prior Run

2:15 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 37 percent, barometer 29.77 inches, adjusted altitude 1,355 feet, track temperature 118 degrees.

Brian Daniels is on the bump spot at 6.668. Castellana was unable to make a run last night and King didn't even make it to the staging lanes. Both made good runs to jump into the field, bumping Daniels and Thomas Patterson. Now Cody Barklage is on the bump spot at 6.359.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.181/230.13, Now #4; Best prior run: 21.810/32.29, Was #26
Right Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 6.198/232.99, Now #5; Best prior run: 12.415/90.75, Was #24

Side-by-side 'teens, a nice show. Stivers skirted the centerline for the last half of the run and never lifted. That bumped both Barklage brothers from the field. Now Chip King is on the bump spot at 6.328.

Left Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 9.884/89.14, Now #24; Best prior run: 14.360/64.67, Was #26
Right Lane: Annette Summer Runs 10.029/94.67, Now #23; Best prior run: 9.169/108.00, Was #23

Both cars shook and spun the tires.

Left Lane: Ben Bray Runs 6.296/226.54, Now #14; Best prior run: 12.159/100.06, Was #26
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.485/209.65, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.483/216.13, Was #19

Both cars went right down the groove, but Ray's chute may have come out early. Bray bumped into the field, putting Jay Payne on the bump spot at 6.322.

Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.206/226.16, Now #6; Best prior run: 11.689/92.04, Was #26
Right Lane: Zach Barklage No Time, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.357/193.29, Was #18

Barklage made his burnout, then shut the car off. Hoover made a nice pass to bump Payne. That put Frankie Taylor on the bump spot at 6.301.

Left Lane: Mike Moran Runs 6.459/229.27, Now #21; Best prior run: 9.052/134.26, Was #24
Right Lane: Frankie Taylor Runs 6.623/202.52, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.301/204.51, Was #16

The starting line crew made a few passes in Barklage's lane before these two made their burnouts. Taylor's car shook and almost collected the wall. Moran made a good run, the best run by one of the turbo cars this weekend.

Left Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.176/227.84, Now #5; Best prior run: 8.058/139.83, Was #24
Right Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 6.117/230.80, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.273/226.96, Was #12

This was strange to watch because Hernandez sat at the starting line for over a second after Patterson left, then blasted down the track. Two good runs, Hernandez solidly taking over the top spot. Joshua Hernandez's incremental times: 60ft-0.987 sec., 330ft-2.644, 660ft-3.993/183.52mph, 1,000ft-5.143.

Left Lane: Brian Daniels Runs 6.359/220.84, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.668/160.75, Was #24
Right Lane: Brandon Pesz Runs 14.027/73.84, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.270/226.01, Was #13

Pesz shook hard, started to skate around, and lifted. Daniels made a full pass, but was not quick enough.

Left Lane: Cody Barklage Runs 6.351/221.02, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.359/224.25, Was #21
Right Lane: Bryan Seward Runs 6.248/227.88, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.270/226.32, Was #12

These runs looked okay, but barklage was not quick enough to get back into the field. Seward improved slightly, stayed 12th.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.205/234.09, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.322/179.90, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Bell Runs 6.158/232.11, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.234/232.31, Was #10

Payne was bumped from the field earlier in the round. Both drivers made nice runs, right down the groove. Payne bumped back in with a huge speed. Now Doug Palmer is on the bump spot at 6.282.

Left Lane: Doug Palmer Runs 6.273/225.30, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.282/224.36, Was #16
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 9.337/117.56, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.216/226.73, Was #11

Critchley's car made a hard move toward the wall. Palmer made a small improvement to move one spot off the bump. Mike Castellana is on the bump spot at 6.281.

Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.233/227.00, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.241/211.83, Was #12
Right Lane: Steve Engel Runs 6.361/223.99, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.149/232.07, Was #3

Nice run by Jenkins. Engel lost a lot of time early in the run.

Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 6.183/229.08, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.152/230.41, Was #4
Right Lane: Glen Kerunsky Runs 6.200/229.51, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.144/226.47, Was #2

Two nice runs - neither improved, but both went smoothly down the groove.

That's it for now, Joshua Hernandez leads the field at 6.117 and Mike Castellana is on the bump spot at 6.281.
