CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 51st annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Annette Summer Runs 9.169/108.00, Now #1
Right Lane: Ben Bray Runs 12.159/100.06, Now #2
6:43 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.66 inches, adjusted altitude 2,154 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.
Bray is driving a spare AMS Corvette this weekend. Summer's turbo car is part of the Gotham City Racing Team, with Mike Ashley.
Both cars shook and smoked the tires.
Left Lane: Brandon Pesz Runs 6.270/226.01, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Moran Runs 9.052/134.26, Now #2
Moran shook early and lifted at half track. Nice run by Pesz, reight down the groove.
Left Lane: Bryan Seward Runs 6.270/226.32, Now #1
Right Lane: Brian Daniels Runs 6.668/160.75, Now #3
Seward matched Pesz' time and was faster, so he gets the top spot for now. Daniels was losing ground quickly and then his engine expired in a heavy cloud of white smoke. But the track was clean.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.483/216.13, Now #4
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.241/211.83, Now #1
Jenkins shows the blown Pro Mod folks how it's done with a nice opening run. Ray lost ground all the way but didn't have any evident problems.
Left Lane: Steve Engel Runs 6.149/232.07, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Castellana No Time, Now #10
Castellana was a no-show.
Left Lane: Mike Bell Runs 6.234/232.31, Now #2
Right Lane: Cody Barklage Runs 6.359/224.25, Now #6
Nice run by Bell, moving into the second spot.
Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 12.415/90.75, Now #13
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 11.689/92.04, Now #11
These two were in almost perfect synchronization, launching, losing traction, pedaling, then coasting.
Right Lane: Doug Palmer Runs 6.282/224.36, Now #6
Nice run with the beautiful Voodoo Corvette.
Left Lane: Glen Kerunsky Runs 6.144/226.47, Now #1
Right Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 14.360/64.67, Now #16
Kuhns got up on the tires, shook, and lifted. Kerunsky blasted down the middle of the groove on a very pretty run to take over the top spot by over a tenth of a second.
Left Lane: Frankie Taylor Runs 6.301/204.51, Now #8
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 21.810/32.29, Now #18
With 16 cars on the books, there is a bump time, but it's meaningless. Coughlin's run looked like Kuhns' run, up on the tires and then severe shake. Taylor made a good run, but slowed on the top end after running 180 mph at half track on a low-twenties pace.
Left Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 6.357/193.29, Now #9
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 8.058/139.83, Now #13
Patterson's car shook and skated out near the wall, fishtailing several times before he lifted. Barklage slowed on the top end after running 182 mph at half track and the Safety Safari rolled the track cleaning equipment to clean up his lane, stating just past half track.
Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.216/226.73, Now #3
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.322/179.90, Now #10
6:22 p.m. Okay, let's try again. Despite several oil delays today, we're really only a few minutes behind schedule. Nice run by Critchley, strong and straight. Payne was quicker and faster than Kerunsky to 1,000 feet, clocked at 3.987 seconds and 185.69 mph to Kerunsky's 4.019 and 184.90 at half track, and 5.158 seconds to Kerunsky's 5.163 at 1,000 feet, but he slowed abruptly past the 1,000-foot marker.
Left Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 6.273/226.96, Now #9
Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 6.152/230.41, Now #3
Ashley made a nice run, but came up short of the top two spots. hernandez steadily lost ground to Ashley at every timing increment.
After one round of qualifying, Kerunsky
leads the pack at 6.144 seconds and Brian Daniels is on the bump spot at 6.668.
